Destination of the Month: Nayarit, Mexico

Nayarit is a state of two faces, and travel journalists will want to see both.

On the Pacific side, the Riviera Nayarit runs north from Banderas Bay, with nearly 30 coastal towns spread along it. There's the surf-town energy of Sayulita and the quieter charm of Bucerías, plus the colonial fort and mangrove lagoons of San Blas, where boats glide through La Tovara National Park. Offshore, the Marieta Islands hide one of Mexico's most photographed beaches, and from December through March, humpback whales come to Banderas Bay to calve.

Head inland and the coast gives way to coffee plantations, volcanic highlands and some of the country's most storied villages. Nayarit is home to nine Pueblos Mágicos. Among them is Mexcaltitán, an island town of stilt houses that many consider the legendary Aztlán, birthplace of the Aztecs. There's also Jala, which sits at the foot of the Ceboruco volcano and throws an annual fair for its giant corn. The Wixárika (Huichol) people give the state much of its cultural identity, and their beadwork and yarn art are among the most distinctive folk art in Mexico.

Getting there is easier than ever. The new terminal at Tepic International Airport has 15 gates, and Puerto Vallarta's airport sits just across the state line. Nayarit welcomed more than 10 million visitors last year and is adding new hotels in 2026. It's a destination that rewards writers who wander past the resort gates.

Thank you, Visit Nayarit, for your partnership with NATJA.
