Highlights from our workshop

The Poetry Manuscript as A Mixtape’, held on the 19th of September. This workshop led by Poet Laureate of Jamaica, Professor Kwame Dawes and Co-facilitated by Jamaican Poet, Ann-Margaret Lim, brought together a select group of poets from previous iterations of the Poet Laureate Prizes for Poetry Competition for a day of learning, discussion, and artistic exchange on manuscript development.

The workshop was aimed at helping the poets obtain guidance on transforming their unpublished manuscripts into cohesive, publication-ready collections targeting the mainstream publishing market.

Participants engaged in insightful sessions focused on developing cohesive poetry collections, revision techniques, and navigating the publishing industry. The workshop combined discussion with practical exercises, challenging the poets to actively organize and assess their manuscripts using various principles and techniques.

The poets were also provided with resource materials to support their ongoing efforts in developing and assembling their poetry manuscripts.

A special highlight of the session was the introduction of the 100 Day Haiku Challenge, which encouraged the poets to cultivate consistency and creativity through daily writing practice.

The National Library of Jamaica is proud to support initiatives that nurture the literary talent of our poets and strengthen their work within a supportive and creative environment.

Hidden inside our vault is a piece of 19th-century history: MS 2166, a unique manuscript honouring Rev. George William Downer, rector of the Parish Church of Kingston.

Featuring Victorian calligraphy, original signatures, and hand copied Masonic initiation rites that were never printed, this record offers a look into the hidden networks and practices of colonial Jamaica.
