Halloween fun in the hood! 🎃👻🕷️

Love, love, LOVE living in our little cul-de-sac! 🥰 So lucky to have such a wonderful, safe neighbourhood where the kids can run around, trick-or-treat and have an absolute ball!

And even better, having some of our very best friends living right across the road! ❤️

@jaselowery always puts on the BEST Halloween act, complete with his infamous chainsaw antics! 🤣👏This year @hannalowery and I decided to get amongst the dress-up fun too - because why should the kids have all the fun?! 😂💃

A whole lot of cobwebs, creepy decorations, fabulous costumes, happy kids and plenty of laughs!

I know that our US fam @calikiwi7274 @maytae800 @its_dom will be so proud of us embracing the Halloween tradition 🫶 - I love making these memories with P and our bestie neighbours 🧡

Happy Halloween! 🎃👻 by @nattie74

Today our beautiful niece, Ariel Annelise, would have turned 35, but our darling angel will be forever 21 🌟 💛

You’re terribly missed and 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 loved, gorgeous girl 💛⁣ 🌼

We talk of you often to keep your memory alive, and in you, we know Piper Ariel Rose will 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 have a guardian angel by her side 💛

Not often that @gritza_nz and I get out for a roll together, so I absolutely LOVE when we get away to the beach with the fam and get the chance to do just that! 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️☀️

Soooo grateful to Mum and Dad for being on P watch while we sneak off for a bit of two-wheeled time together! 🥰

An easy 2-hour ride was on the plan for both of us today, so I figured I’d head out with G for a change.

Of course, that meant my ‘easy’ roll wasn’t quite as easy as it was supposed to be! 🙈😂

But bloody love riding the highways and byways around Whitianga. Such beautiful countryside, awesome roads and soooo much fun!

Good company, good riding and a whole lot of fresh sea air. What’s not to love?! 🥰🚴‍♀️☀️

Lots of time on the bike incoming! 🚴‍♀️

It looks like my tri season is getting off to a slightly different start than I’d hoped - again! 🙈

A few days after my angiogram, I was scheduled for a hip MRI to investigate a suspected labral tear - but never imagined I’d have that allergic reaction to the contrast dye used during my angiogram! 🙄

The problem? My hip MRI is actually an arthrogram - which also involves injecting contrast dye.

So, despite the ED doctor saying it should be “fine” to go ahead 😳, my GP (quite understandably!) said ABSOLUTELY NOT! 😂 Especially given the allergic reaction was still raging through my body!

Anyhooo, obvs taking my GP’s advice, MRI has been pushed to 3 Nov, with sports doc follow-up on 17 Nov. Physio Jonny said absolutely no running until I’ve seen the sports doc.

Which brings us to Tinman on 22 November 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️

The opening race of my season. National Standard Distance Champs. Qualifier for next year’s World Champs in Hamburg.

And, well… not being able to run is somewhat problematic when you’re trying to race a triathlon! 🤣

So, I’ve made the disappointing call to sit this one out 😔

In the grand scheme of things, I know it’s not a big deal. There are people facing far more devastating challenges, and I’m conscious of that.

But I also think it’s okay to feel a wee bit gutted when something you’ve been working towards and looking forward to is now off the cards - especially after a never-ending run of injuries, setbacks and comebacks! 🙄

But here’s the thing… there’s still PLENTY I can do! 🙌

Time on the bike 🚴‍♀️ Time in the pool 🏊‍♀️
Strength and conditioning 💪 Plenty of walking! 🚶‍♀️

There’ll be another pathway to Worlds. Nationals will still be there next year (and hopefully, so will I! 🤞😂)

So, I’m choosing not to focus on what I can’t do, but everything my body IS still capable of doing 🤩 And this morning, Zwifting in the garage watching the sun come up, I was reminded just how much I still have to be grateful for ☀️

We’ll keep showing up, keep moving, doing what we can, and see where things take us.

We’ll reassess, regroup and go again.

Again. 🤣🙈

Well, here we are again! 🙄😂🏊‍♀️

I’m beginning to think I spend more time making swimming comebacks than actually swimming! 🤣

Sometimes I don’t realise just how much I miss being in the water until I’m back in it 🤩

After another three weeks out of the pool - thanks to the angiogram, allergic reaction and subsequent rest and recovery (such a drama queen! 🙄) - it was bloody lovely to be back today!

A nice, cruisy 2km to ease myself back into things, with allll my favourite (pool) toys - paddles, buoy and band.

Now, with only 39 days until Tinman Triathlon, I’m STILL navigating injuries, not running at the moment, and STILL feeling about as far removed from being a triathlete as I possibly could! 🙈

Who knows what the next few weeks will bring? We’ll just keep chipping away with Coach @reado1979‘s training sessions, taking the wins where we can, and seeing how things unfold 🤞

For today, it just felt bloody good to be back in the water (again!) 😆

How bloody cool is our @the.cupcake.cartel 🧁🩷

A HUGE shout-out to my fellow Cupcake Captain @toironmanandbeyond who every year organises our @ironmantri World Champs sweepstakes, allocating each of us a pro athlete to follow, support and cheer on! 👏🩷 Such a cool initiative!

This year Damo drew @matthewdmarquardt for me, so naturally I dropped Matt a message to wish him well for Kona this weekend! 🌺🔥

And how bloody cool is it that these absolute LEGENDS of our sport, preparing for one of the biggest races on the planet, still take the time to respond?! 🥹🥰

Just another reason I love this sport and our amazing pink family so much! 🩷

The sweetest team in triathlon! 🧁

Goooo Matt! And GOOD LUCK to all our Cuppies racing in Kona! 🌺🔥🤙. by @nattie74

Absolutely stoked to be back as one of the four global @the.cupcake.cartel Captains for 2027 🧁💗 - and very proudly flying the flag as the regional captain for New Zealand 🇳🇿

I’m so honoured to have been chosen again by our wonderful founders, @callummillward and @aliseselsy , alongside these absolute legends - @toironmanandbeyond in 🇦🇺 and @tri_hippster and Kaitlyn in 🇺🇸 🥰

Those who know me know just how much I LOVE this team. I’m heading into my sixth year as a Cupcake, and for me it has always been about so much more than triathlon. It’s the people, the friendships, the support, the laughs, the adventures and having a whole bunch of humans who completely understand why swimming, biking and running for hours on end is considered a perfectly sensible way to spend your spare time 😂

I absolutely love cheering people on, celebrating the wins - big and small - and helping people feel part of the sweetest team in triathlon, so I’m ridiculously excited to be doing exactly that for our Batch of 2027 Cupcakes 👏

Can’t wait to see what adventures this year brings and to cheer you all on along the way!

Bring on 2027, Cuppies! No Cupcakes left behind🧁💗 by @nattie74

And now for today’s instalment… where my strictly prescribed recovery day went spectacularly off-script! 🙈

I was having a lovely restful day until this afternoon, when I noticed my face starting to go red and swell, with a rash appearing on my face and body.

Now, as someone with years of experience with exercise-induced anaphylaxis - yep, it’s a thing, and the irony that I do endurance events isn’t lost on me 😂 - I knew I was having an allergic reaction of some sort.

Cue mild panic and the rallying of my wonderful village 🥰 Mum @nurseruthw called our GP, so they were all ready for our arrival, while big sis @scone54 made a mad dash to come and pick me (and P) up.

Adrenaline quickly administered, and then Dr Alf decided an ambulance was needed anyway (protocol for anaphylaxis). Turns out I’d had a delayed allergic reaction to the contrast dye from yesterday’s angiogram - a very rare reaction, but if it’s going to happen, it’ll happen to me 🙄

Anyhooo… with my ‘responsible adult’ of the day, Mum 🫶, on board, we eventually made it to Waikato Hospital ED and to hang around for a few hours of observation.

The ED doc looked back through my notes and saw that the last time I’d presented at Waikato with exercise-induced anaphylaxis was 18 years ago. His response: “Oh, so you were 18 then, right?” 😂😂 After yesterday’s nurse also refusing to believe I’m 52 and insisting I was in my early 40s, this guy VERY quickly became my favourite doctor today 😉

But in all seriousness, thankfully this reaction was nothing like the severe anaphylaxis I’ve experienced in the past, but definitely enough to give us all a bit of a fright.

Apparently I may be sporting a red, rashy face for the next couple of days, so if you see me, don’t be alarmed! Although you probably won’t, because I’ll be hiding out at home 🤪

I think I’ve had quite enough excitement for one week now, thanks! 🥴

So grateful for my fam 🥰 and so grateful for all the front line peeps doing an incredible job 🤗 by @nattie74

Well, that’s a relief! 🫀

Had my coronary angiogram today and the very good news is… no blocked arteries! 🥳 So… we live to fight another day! 😅

The staff at Braemar Hospital were absolutely amazing, and it was so lovely to see my beautiful cuz @weinbergcasie and @11zanne11 there too, who both happened to be working today 🥰
(My nurse was an absolute sweetheart too - and couldn’t believe I was 52, swearing I was in my early 40s… so naturally he was my favourite person there 😂)
Feeling incredibly grateful that we have health insurance and were able to get everything properly checked out (and have yummy salmon for dinner! 😋)

Currently feeling a little like I’ve been hit by a bus 🥴 - I’m blaming the sedation for that - and can confirm that going into an artery through your wrist is NO JOKE! 😳

Apparently my only job for the next 24 hours is to rest, use my arm in only a very limited capacity…and behave myself 😇

Huge thanks to @gritza_nz for being my ‘responsible adult’ today ❤️ and to Mum @nurseruthw and Dad for having P and accommodating our rather late 10.30pm pick-up tonight! 🙈 🫶

I think we’ll ALL sleep pretty well tonight 😴

Very, very grateful 🩷 by @nattie74

Happy 11th birthday to our beautiful little bean 🎂

We love you beyond measure, P, and we are so incredibly proud of the thoughtful, kind and compassionate young lady you are becoming 🤩

One of the things we love most about you is the way you just LOVE life 🥰 You throw yourself into new challenges, say yes to opportunities, give things a go and take it all in your stride.

You bring so much fun, energy, kindness and joy into our lives, and watching you grow into the gorgeous human you are is such a privilege 🥹

Keep being exactly you, little bean - curious, brave, caring, determined and always ready for the next adventure 🫶

Happy 11th birthday, our gorgeous girl. We love you more than you’ll ever know ❤️ by @nattie74

What a lovely surprise 🥰

After all the trips back and forth across the ditch over the last few years, I finally crossed paths with my beautiful friend @celebrantannie , who was working my flight home today! 🤗

I already love flying @airnz , but having Annie looking after me made this one extra special - she absolutely treated me like royalty, and because I was getting the royal treatment, the lovely older couple sitting beside me ended up getting it too 🥂

Such a gorgeous way to finish another week in Sydney and head home 🤩

Love you, Annie - you made my flight! 🫶 by @nattie74

Hello, old friend! 👋🏊‍♀️

It feels like an absolute aaaaaage since I’ve been in this pool - and three weeks since I’ve been in any pool, to be precise 🤧

Being sick has kept me away, but now that my nostrils are clear enough to breathe (for the most part 😂), today I finally got back in.

Between injuries, this recent heart stuff and now being sick, I’ve been feeling about as far away from a triathlete as I could possibly feel, just as we start counting down to race season!

That feeling of being behind the eight ball heading into race season seems to have become a bit of a recurring theme these past few winters - mostly thanks to one injury or another 🙄

It’s always at this point that you start questioning yourself a little - whether you’re fit enough, whether you’re doing enough, whether you’ll actually be ready. Usually at this time of year we’d be getting ready to head off to Worlds, but having turned down our slots this year, our next start line is in November - and the chance to qualify all over again 🌎🤞

Luckily Coach @reado1979 is there to keep me on track, remind me we’ve still got time, and - as always - have more faith in what I’m capable of than I sometimes do 😂

And I keep reminding myself that I choose to do this. I don’t have to swim, bike and run silly distances. I choose to - and I’m incredibly grateful that I can ☺️

So onwards and upwards we go. One swim, one ride, one run at a time 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️

And today, a 3km hit-out felt bloody good - nice to be back 🏊‍♀️
