I trained horses when I was younger, can you tell? 🤣

Prancing Pippin, the Japanese Spitz with fancy feet heel is no pony but his trot would rival any show horse

Welcoming a second dog into the home? Don't forget to consider how the dogs themselves feel about sharing the home, the yard and you!

Japanese Spitz on the outside. Malinois firmware on the inside. 😂

High drive? ✔️
Brain that never clocks off? ✔️
Must have a job? ✔️
Reacts before you've finished blinking? ✔️
Teeth included? ✔️
Off switch? Still searching... ❌

11 kg of fluff, opinions and questionable life choices.

Pippin, mate. Can we just have a day off? 🐾

The experience of living with a reactive dog changes you.

It can affect your confidence, your peace and change how you feel about your dog.

Remember, you don't have to do it alone!

Some behind-the-scenes training with Pippin.

Not formal obedience. Not a how-to guide.

Just some of the small skills we practise to develop engagement, communication and functional obedience for everyday life.

Pippin came to me as a highly reactive and overstimulated rescue dog. Through training like this, he has learned to focus, accept guidance and work with me.

For us, the heel is about much more than where his feet are.

It’s about connection, communication and helping him feel safe with me.

Thank you for watching.

Sometimes progress isn't about finding the next technique.

It's about developing your own skills, reading your dog better, understanding what's happening underneath the behaviour, and learning how to respond.

I don't think every dog's ego needs to be trained out of them.

Some dogs have opinions. Some have attitude.

Some really don't enjoy being told what to do.

I've had quite a few of those dogs and I've found that sometimes the answer isn't to simply make them smaller.

It's to give that personality somewhere productive to go.

How I create value around the heel position isn't limited to one approach, but this is a good place to start.

It helps define where "heel" is and gives the dog an idea of how to step into that position.

Aim to reward the dog when they find the exact position.

A few repetitions every day can make finding heel fun for your dog while introducing the concept of moving together, side by side.

Try it today. 🐾 taken in Cloverdale Community Centre by @naturaldogtrainingau
