I guess you could call this an Oliver vlog 🦉

Oliver is a wild Eastern Screech-Owl who was found about 10 years ago on the side of the road after being struck by a vehicle. He sustained a wing injury that left him unable to fly or return to the wild. That’s when he found his forever home at Green Cay Nature Center.

He’s now approximately 16 years old, making him a senior owl, and one of our beloved educational animal ambassadors. Because of his age and disability, it’s important that we provide him with regular enrichment so I set up a safe area in my office window where he can roam and look outside while I do admin work (A win-win because I get to look at him…)

This is basically a POV from my eyes… staring at Oliver 😂 I mean… working.

Had our first Purple Martin nest check of the season!

No eggs just yet, but the martins have been busy. Lots of nest building and already 6 mud dams, which is a big jump from last season when we only had a couple total.

Here’s where we’re starting at:
• Rack A: 8/12 gourds with nests
• Rack B: 8/12 (3 mud dams)
• Rack C: 9/12 (1 mud dam)
• Rack D: 10/11 (2 mud dams)

Our friends are back, settling in and clearly getting ready… we had birds actively working on producing more while checking the gourds, so it really feels like eggs are right around the corner!

Next nest check is Saturday after our public Bird Talk & Tour: Purple Martins with Shelly Rozenberg, @thepurplemartinqueen, @auduboneverglades Purple Martin Conservation Coordinator. If you’re local to South Florida, you’re welcome to join! Registration through @greencaywetlands.

Our Purple Martin friends have finally arrived and are starting to nest at the Purple Martin Sanctuary Site. They were a little late this year after those unexpected cold spells so late in migration. Watching the timing shift in real time has been intriguing… just as much as it is scary not to know what’s to come.

It’s comforting to finally hear the lovely chatter of one of my favorite migratory birds. What’s harder to sit with is knowing these changes aren’t random. Climate change, or climate weirding, shows up in ways that seem small at first, but they matter. And it’s the wildlife who feel it first and hardest.

The part I struggle with most is the innocent lives that will be affected through no fault of their own. I only hope we continue choosing to care and support not just ourselves, but the rest of the natural world as we move through this transition together. taken in Green Cay Wetlands by @naturalistblake
