This summer while living at a Soto Zen Buddhist monastery I came across a teaching by Koho Zenji:
Do not dwell where the Buddha is not.
This teaching was challenging for me to understand and put into practice. But recently I began to understand it in a way worth sharing. Buddhism teaches the path of liberation for all beings. Our greed, anger and delusion is what prevents us from realizing this liberation. So when we dwell in greed anger and delusion we are where the buddha is not. We are where liberation is not. In my own struggles I have come to understand the places where the liberation of all beings is not possible because of my own greed, anger and delusion. All of us suffer from these afflictions and all of us can seek refuge from this suffering. Again and again take refuge in the practice and embodiment of compassion. Suffering is universal but there is a path to liberation which is realized through the practice of compassion for all beings. When you realize that all beings are your ancestors, that we are all part of the endless dimension of universal life, what other path towards liberation could there be?

Among all living things - mountains and rivers grass and trees - even the sound of wind and rising waves - there is nothing whatever that is not empty. —Ippen by @naturalresources

The path of water is such that when it rises to the sky, it becomes raindrops; when it falls to the ground, it becomes rivers. -Wenzi by @naturalresources

It’s been about 5 years since sowing these wildflower seeds at the Bow tie project. They have held on valiantly and fill my heart every spring when I visit them. As part of a community workshop we built berms from old burlap coffee bags and invasive fountain grass that we removed with the hope of building soil and habitat. Sometimes things come together in just the right way and a small gesture results in a lasting relationship. But who knows if they will be around next year? I am excited to go hunting for them in any case. by @naturalresources

One of the biggest lessons I have learned from my grandparents is that gardens are relationships. The presence and intention of the people who tend the land are manifested in the health and balance of the garden. Here I am amongst an abundance of blooms in a garden I cultivated for love. The Su-yi Ching sutra teaches: that the Buddha did not appear in this world to save sentient beings. Rather the Buddha appeared in this world to liberate beings from the mistaken view that there is birth and death.
