This is Nkasa Linyanti.

In the far north-east of Namibia, the desert gives way to something completely unexpected: rivers, floodplains and vast open wetlands, with wildlife moving freely through one of southern Africa’s most important conservation landscapes.

Here, on Nkasa Island in the heart of Nkasa Rupara National Park, life moves with the landscape. Mornings out on game drive, afternoons on the water, elephants crossing the floodplains, lions calling in the distance, and those quiet moments back at camp when there is nowhere else you need to be.

Nkasa has always been about more than building a beautiful camp. It is about protecting this wild corner of Namibia, creating a reason for it to remain wild, and allowing the wildlife that once came under such pressure here to continue to return and thrive.

Hidden away in the southern Okavango Delta, where the Xudum River winds through one of the Delta’s last remaining large wilderness areas, a new premier safari camp is taking shape: Mokolwane Plains.

The notion of immersion underpins the architectural language of Mokolwane Plains, opening with five capacious under-canvas suites with a family suite and private villa to follow later in the year.

In the landscape of NG29 which surrounds the camp, it’s the leopard that consumes the safari spotlight. This concession is home to Africa’s third-highest recorded density of leopard – a haven for wildlife film-makers and those seeking meaningful leopard encounters.

Leopard, wild dog, lion, cheetah… and a lodge for every kind of traveller.

Khwai Private Reserve, in Botswana's Okavango Delta, offers 200,000 hectares of untamed wilderness to explore, a tapestry of emerald forests and glistening waterways.

This was once a hunting concession, before we, together with our partners, turned it over to ecotourism. Today the reserve stands as a great conservation triumph that gives back directly to wildlife and local communities.

There have been some fascinating sightings coming out of Tuludi recently.

There’s this gorgeous little wild dog pup – lighter than any of us recall ever seeing.

A beautiful shot of Khutle in dappled sunlight (Kuhtle is a daughter of the 14 year old leopard Nikki, who’s quite the icon of the area.)

This alpha female among the wild dogs has injured her leg so she’s reliant on being fed by the pack. It’s well documented that African wild dogs take care of their young, injured and elderly.

And a beautiful cheetah sighting to round things off.

It’s far from unusual for guests to leave a safari changed, and sisters Riley and Mara returned from their trip through Mbamba, Tawana and Jack’s Camp determined to raise funds for the Mmogo Centres for Women.

Since then they’ve raised an extraordinary $10,000.

“By providing sewing machines, quality fabrics, and essential tools, our goal is to help them develop sustainable skills and build businesses that will continue long after we step away.”

Family safaris are as much about the doing as the seeing. The wildlife out here is undoubtedly a feast for the eyes, but kids can get hands on too, comparing their handspan against tracks in the sand, helping prepare their own food and even finding little critters around the lodge itself.

The discoveries are endless.
