Hi friends. Well, there is plenty to worry about right now. If you are here, you know of what realities I speak. These are not misplaced worries. They are real and present, existential dangers. I know this, and so do you.

The thing I keep coming back to, amidst this crushing Knowing, is that despite it all, the planet continues to nourish and delight us. Generously. Miraculously. Completely quotidianly. Alongside the horrors, there are still so many wonders.

I think of this quote from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s essential, much-quoted (and for good reason) tome, Braiding Sweetgrass: “Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy.” Kimmerer says that she *chooses* joy over despair “not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the earth gives me daily and I must return the gift.”

Our earth is, of course, capable of despair and destruction, too. I know this, and so do you. But in the very next breath, smashed up alongside the burnt cinders, there is also birdsong.

✷ Nature Face ✷ is my humble offering to help us all (myself included) remember this—over and over again and as often as possible. It is not a one-and-done kind of work, this Remembering. It is a choice we make, over and over again, because to choose despair is to turn a blind eye to all the things still so worth saving.

I must admit, I don’t know what this container will hold quite yet! But I hope you’ll meet me there, in that field. I hope you’ll join me for a walk or tell me about what you’re growing in your garden or what policies you’re championing.

I’ll leave you with another gem from RWK, the queen that she is: “It is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.” What a gift! Let us do some of this work together and see what happens, shall we? by @natureface.place
