In FreshwaterWILD we learned all about fly fishing! 🎣⁠⁠Many people like to go fishing and use a “spinning” outfit, which uses a flashy type of lure to attract fish. But the other style of fishing is to imitate a “fly” or insect, and that is called “fly fishing”. ⁠⁠The secret to fly fishing is trying to copy the bugs the fish are feeding on - and there are many! 🥾Let’s go for a hike! Check out these family hiking tips: ⁠⁠🥾Keep it easy and feature friendly! For beginner hikers, pick a hike that isn’t too long or too strenuous. For kids, the hike is about the experience. Picking a trail that has some features – be it a lake, stream, waterfall or something else will keep kids occupied and give them a fun goal to reach.⁠⁠🥾Keep everyone fed, hydrated and cool! That seemingly kid-perfect spot becomes a miserable place when your child's most basic needs aren't met. When children are fed, hydrated and cool during a summer adventure, they possess explorer superpowers.⁠⁠🥾Watch the weather. Nasty conditions can make things uncomfortable, scary or even dangerous for kids, so layer up and be ready to head for home if skies turn dark and stormy. In some areas of BC, like in the mountains, weather conditions can change quickly! ⁠⁠🥾Safety first! Make a plan for the day and share where you are going with a family member or a friend back home. ✨Explorer Day Highlight: Discovering pollinators at the Emerald Forest ✨⁠⁠The Whistler NatureKids Club enjoyed a beautiful day in nature learning about why pollinators are important. ⁠⁠NatureKids experienced many fun learning activities including a relay race where participants pretended to be pollinators moving pollen from one flower to another. ⁠⁠NatureKids also completed a scavenger hunt where pollinators were matched to the plants they pollinate! 🐍Happy World Snake Day 🐍⁠⁠Sssselebrate with these fun facts! ⁠⁠🐍There are over 4,000 species of snakes on Earth with 9 species found here in British Columbia! The Western rattlesnake is a member of the Viper family and the only truly venomous species found in British Columbia. ⁠⁠🐍A snake uses its tongue to help it smell. It flicks its long, forked tongue to pick up chemical molecules from the air, ground, or water. The tongue carries the smelly molecules back to two small openings in the roof of the snake's mouth where they're analyzed.⁠⁠🐍Snakes are covered with rows of scales. Scales are hardened folds in the outer layer of skin. A scale can be shiny and smooth, or it can have a ridge running down the middle. A snake molts, or sheds its skin, many times during its life. ⁠⁠🐍Did you know we have boas in BC? The Northern rubber boa is a distinct, small, thick-bodied snake that is almost always less than 70 cm long. 🌊Happy World Orca Day! 🌊 ⁠⁠Check out these fintastic facts!⁠⁠🪸Orcas (killer whales) are found in every ocean on Earth. They live in both open oceans and coastal waters, though they are most abundant in cold, temperate environments like Antarctica, the North Pacific, and the North Atlantic.⁠⁠🪸Three distinct ecotypes of orcas (killer whales) share the coastal waters of BC: residents, transients and offshores. They may look similar but they eat and behave differently and even have different languages! ⁠⁠🪸Orcas can live a long time! On average females will live 50 years and males can live up to 29 years. ⁠⁠🪸Plastic pollution poses huge threats to all marine life including orcas. Plastic can entangle ocean life and some marine mammals may eat it. In NatureWILD’s Summer 2019 issue we swam into the world of humpback whales 🐳⁠⁠The humpback is one of the largest whales that visit B.C.’s coastal areas. A humpback may grow to 16 or 17 metres, with females usually slightly longer than males, and weighing up to 40 tonnes. That is about the same length and weight as a fully-loaded city bus! ⁠⁠We know ‘our’ humpbacks migrate to Hawaii or Mexico for the winter, where you might hear the males singing, and where females give birth to a calf four metres long and weighing 700 kg. The humpbacks then return northward in May for summer feeding and can often be seen off the west coast of Vancouver Island and in the coastal waters near Victoria and Campbell River.⁠⁠To find out more about other fascinating nature topics subscribe to our NatureWILD magazine!
