Funk, power, and liberation: Deize Tigrona’s legacy 🇧🇷

By NAVALHA, an Amsterdam-based collective dedicated to curating and protecting queer sounds emerging from Latin America.

“ @deizetigrona is more than a pioneer of 2000s Brazilian funk. She is a queer icon whose voice has carried across generations and geographies, from the favelas of Rio to dance floors around the world. Her music holds joy and fury, memory and movement. This feature is not only a record of that encounter, a way to hold space for her voice, her legacy, and the sounds she continues to shape, but also a full- circle moment for both of us – two queer kids from different small towns in Brazil who grew up listening and dancing to her restless beats.”

for many of us, in particular queer bodies, club spaces can become conduits of self-actualisation; a place where we rehearse and reclaim our freedom; a fertile ground for experimentation – unfolding right then and there on the dancefloor. that is why we need to work together to safeguard the space, allowing everyone to move freely and enjoy the night to its fullest.

so, prior to entering the space, we ask you to please be as respectful, mindful, and considerate as you can. here are a few talking points we felt the need to address:

✦ do be considerate and mindful of how you move throughout the space and make sure to hold space for other bodies.
✦ do not exhibit any unwanted behavior; do not touch someone or seek physical contact unless it is consensual.
✦ do keep in mind that this is a queer club and primarily holds the space for queer people.
✦ do not make unsolicited comments about people’s bodies or physical appearances.
✦ do seek out the awareness staff or anyone from staff if your safety is compromised to any extent.
