Some reflections on language in the diaspora, Berlin 11.09.2026

When you live abroad for a longer period of time, one day you may notice that your mother tongue feels further and further away, and that certain sentiments or expressions no longer quite work the way they used to.
When returning to the place where you were born, you can suddenly feel this sense of disconnection and a kind of language barrier that is difficult to explain, because it isn’t something linear or constant. It comes and goes, always accompanied by a confusion that is hard to put into words.

My daily life consists of three languages that I speak on a regular basis: English, Spanish, and German. German is my mother tongue. But since I live in Spain, Spanish has gradually become my main language and has gently pushed German further into the background.
I speak German and English with my clients, but somehow Spanish has become the language of my feelings and everyday expressions. Because of this, expressing myself in German has started to feel increasingly difficult.

I think language is also a big part of my art. Through my work, I have found a fourth language or another way of expressing myself that exists beyond the three languages I speak. Perhaps the language of my work is a mixture of all three, or rather a kind of meta-language, compensating for the dilemma I experience between them.
Maybe this fourth language allows me to express something that cannot quite be articulated in any one of the three languages alone.
