You were 91
when the world got too quiet
when God called you home
and I wasn’t ready
I'm still not...

Today
you would’ve been 94 candles deep into grace
and I don’t know where to light them
so I'll set fire to my words instead

I miss you like a song I can’t find
like a prayer I forgot the ending to
like breath I owe somebody
I want to visit
Not your grave
I mean Heaven
I mean your Heaven
where I know you’re probably in a robe
telling angels what they forgot to season right
Where you still got that lean in your laugh
still walk like wisdom
still hush a room
without raising your voice
I wonder
do you watch us while we sleep?
Pull covers up over shoulders
Mumble “Lord, keep ’em”
before going back to whatever angels do when they clock in
I know you're not gone
you just graduated
from earthbound to everywhere
from hands we could hold
to hands that hold us without being seen
You were the calm in our chaos
the voice that could crack thunder open
then still the sky in the same sentence
You raised soldiers
but never stopped being soft
You raised warriors
but still kissed foreheads like it was gospel
You raised me
Now I’m raising my daughter
and I swear
sometimes when she laughs
it sounds like you in the background
like you clapped once
and it echoed into her lungs

I want to tell you everything
how I been trying to heal
how the house still don’t feel like home
how grief be showing up
in the color of red
in the sound of music
in the way nobody wears their pain like pearls the way you did
You taught me how to hold it in
but I don’t want to today
I’m hurting
I want to be held
like you used to
when the world was too big
and your arms were the only place I fit
Ninety-four
and I can still hear your feet shuffling
still hear you say
“You alright, baby?”
even when I wasn’t
If they ask me
what kind of woman you were
I’ll point to my strength
and call it inherited
I’ll point to my peace
and call it protected
I’ll point to my daughter
and call it full circle
You did a good job
An immaculate job
And I hope you know that
Not just today
but every day my heart gets heavy
and I still choose to carry it anyway
