Nella Lomotan’s (@nellal ) decision to build her first nature-centred boutique stay at the most remote point of Nacpan Beach was completely deliberate.

@ecosanctuaries.elnido is announced by a four-kilometre strip of cream-hued sand nestled between pristine waters and lush green hills, which is, in Nella’s words, “a true refuge designed to connect with nature and local craftsmanship”. The resort is entirely powered by solar energy; its design maximises natural air flow to reduce carbon emissions; it follows a zero single-use plastics policy, and its kitchen uses vegetables that grown in the backyard’s orchard.

In Cebu, located in the Visayas region of the Philippines, a traditional albularyo is called a Mananambal and their work of healing is called panambal.

Mananambals obtain their status through ancestry or through apprenticeship. Their practice combined elements from Christianity and sorcery which are a reflection of the legacies left from the conversion to Catholicism of the islands from Spanish colonization.

The Mananambal use two common methods in their practice: herbal medicine and “orasyon”, healing prayers deriving from a bible equivalency called the “librito”.

“Today, Siquijor is best known for the otherworldly skills of some of its inhabitants, which have earned it the nickname of ‘Home of Witches’.

The Mananambal - native word for ‘healer’ - are highly respected in the local culture for their knowledge of traditional medicine. Some of their concoctions and scent baths promise fortune, love or simply alleviate body pain. The Mananambal not only keep secret to the techniques of their rituals, but also maintain their whereabouts unknown, which makes searching for them an adventure in its own right.”

Almost every interior designer out there will agree that Rattan furniture brings to mind a warm feeling of nostalgia. Although rattan’s golden era was the 1970’s, it can now be found in the form of accents in almost every major décor brand, from Maison Du Monde to Zara Home.

But, where does this precious fibre come from and what is the harvest and production process like?

Those were the questions local writer Angelica Misa asked herself when we reached out to her. Read what she found out about this ancient Filipino craftsmanship on our first issue of Naware Magazine.
