It was great to be back at Middleton as a proud alumna! It was wonderful to be part of the pregame festivities, celebrate Senior Night, and cheer on the Middleton Tigers as they took on the Blake Yellowjackets. by @nayafortampa

On Wednesday, I joined students and parents at Sulphur Springs K-8 for National Walk and Bike to School Day! Thank you to @sidewalk_stompers for bringing attention to the importance of safe routes for our students.

Our City of Tampa Mobility team was also there to observe students’ walks to school and experience firsthand some of the challenges they face along the way.

Every child deserves to get to school safely, whether they walk, bike, or take another form of transportation. From missing sidewalks and unsafe crossings to the need for better pedestrian infrastructure, we have work to do to make our streets safer for our youngest residents.

I’m proud to have helped secure $500,000 in the FY2027 budget for sidewalk and street safety improvements in Sulphur Springs. This investment is an important step toward addressing neighborhood needs and making our streets safer for students, families, and everyone who walks in our community.

Safe routes to school are essential for our children’s safety, independence, and access to education. Let’s continue working together to build safer streets and stronger neighborhoods! 🧡 by @nayafortampa

A great morning with my good friend, Pete Edwards, a longtime community advocate, commissioner on the board for Tampa Housing Authority and avid HART bus rider!

We started downtown at Marion Transit Center on Route 5 and continued our ride on Route 12. Along the way, we talked about HART’s history, Pete’s experiences as a longtime rider, and the role public transportation plays in connecting our communities.

I enjoyed speaking with bus operators and seeing riders from different backgrounds and generations. I also noticed some of the challenges along the way, including stops without shelters or benches and neighborhood infrastructure needs.

Good transportation is about more than getting from point A to point B. It’s also about access, opportunity, and quality of life. Sometimes, the best way to understand our community needs are to experience it firsthand and listen to the people who depend on these services every day.

Thank you, Pete, for sharing your perspective and knowledge with me! 🧡 by @nayafortampa

Yesterday, it was great to see our community come together to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11th. I was grateful to attend the gathering at Mission BBQ and the New Tampa September 11th 25th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony hosted by Councilman Viera.

25 years later, we continue to remember, honor, and stand together. 🇺🇸🧡 by @nayafortampa

Today, marks 25 years since 9/11. Like many of us, I remember that tragic day and the faces of my loved ones and our family as we watched it unfold.

This morning I attended the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at the Tampa Firefighters Museum to remember the lives that were lost and honor the heroes who answered the call.

May we hold their families and loved ones in our hearts today as we reflect. 🇺🇸🧡 by @nayafortampa

As we head toward Thursday’s vote on the Rays stadium agreement, I wanted to revisit some of the comments I made during our first vote in May on the non-binding MOU.

My position then and my approach now have been consistent: this is about more than baseball. It’s about what this opportunity could mean for our communities and whether we can ensure meaningful, enforceable benefits for Tampa residents.

I’ve continued asking questions, listening to constituents across District 5, those who support the project and those who have concerns, and reviewing the details closely.

The questions I raised in May remain important to me: truly affordable and attainable housing, quality jobs and opportunities for our youth, living wages, opportunities for small and minority-owned businesses, youth sports and programming, and the possible extension of the East Tampa CRA as we consider how this opportunity could create broader, equitable investment in our communities.

I’m sharing my remarks from May as a reminder of where I stood then and the issues I’ve continued to examine.

I encourage everyone to read the documents for yourself. I have been reading through them, asking questions, and talking with constituents, and I believe our community deserves the opportunity to do the same.

I’ll continue to do my due diligence, ask the tough questions, listen to our community, and do my best to make decisions based on what is best for our residents, our city, and our future. by @nayafortampa

A Day of Civic Engagement & Community Leadership

TOBA and the Leadership Institute network recently spent an impactful day at the City of Tampa, gaining a firsthand look at local government, civic leadership, and community engagement.

We kicked off the day at Old City Hall, hearing from Tampa City Council members, observing the Thursday City Council meeting, and receiving a special commendation recognizing TOBA’s continued work in the community, presented by TLI alum and City Council Member Naya Young!

We also connected with leaders from various City departments to learn more about their community engagement efforts, followed by lunch and an insightful conversation with Mayor Jane Castor about leadership, local impact, and the day-to-day work of leading Tampa.

Our afternoon continued at The City Center at Hannah Avenue, where we toured the campus, explored Tampa’s history, and participated in a panel discussion with the City’s Community Engagement leadership team.

A huge thank you to the City of Tampa leadership, City Council members, department leaders, and staff for welcoming TOBA with such a warm reception and making the day both enlightening and memorable.

Leadership. Civic Engagement. Community Impact.

That’s the work. ✊🏾

In July, our Mayor’s Neighborhood University Saturday Session focused on all things tech!

From understanding cybersecurity and artificial intelligence to connecting with City government, and building brand presence, “Software Saturday” brought together local experts to help participants bridge the digital divide.

This edition of MNU Saturday Session was developed and hosted by interns within the @cityoftampa Community Engagement and Partnerships Department.

Special thanks to Career Source Tampa Bay, Graphic Designer & Artist Omar Richardson, and the City of Tampa Technology and Innovation Department for sharing their insights and expertise. by @nayafortampa
