An evening of durational music comes to Wood Street Galleries on Friday, May 29th during the Gallery Crawl.

Forest Management is the long running ambient project of Chicago musician, John Daniel. His prolific output has been featured on labels such as No Rent Records, American Dreams, Vaknar, and numerous others. John’s music is exactly the kind of tonal and patient sound I seek in drone and ambient music and I am overjoyed to bring him back to Pittsburgh.

Local support from long player veterans: Estelle, Nick Breinich, Gusto, and Bed Load

A veritable feast of moving image mysteries will be projected for the duration of the event by film archivist Steven Haines of Flea Market Films taken in Wood Street Galleries by @nbreinich8

A few songs off my album warrant a little more explanation. “Eisai Transformations” was the most challenging song to finish and also the one that revealed the direction of the rest of the music. The monk Eisai famously brought green tea cultivation to Japan from China and also created the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. He wanted to shake things up and upset some dogmatic practices within Buddhism in Japan. He also is responsible for the creation of Kennin-ji Temple which is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. Samples you hear in the track are from the creaking floorboards of the temple mixing in with the local bird sounds and some of the visitors talking. The album cover photo was taken from the room in our ryokan where I essentially stayed up all night in tears because the temple blew my mind. It was incredible to experience art I had only ever seen in Zen books over the years. Eisai lived from 1141-1215, dying at age 74. by @nbreinich8

My debut album “Nothing Left to Dissolve” is out tomorrow on Old Technology. Huge thanks to @d_a_n_b_e_a_n and @tony_surgeon for believing in this record and helping to make it a reality. I hope you can tell that I put a piece of my soul into this album. Props to @plant43 for the incredible design based on a picture I took in Kyoto. I couldn’t be happier with how it all came out, and I’m thrilled to have it released on a label I hold in such high regard. Cassettes will be shipping to the US and beyond.
