It’s #NationalFeralCatDay! Today is all about sharing and celebrating the benefits of Trap-Neuter-Return for community cats.

TNR is the most humane and effective method known for managing unowned, free-roaming cats. The cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies (if legally required) and released back to their territory. Caretakers ensure the colonies have adequate food, water and shelter.

The day was launched 25 years ago at a time when many community cats were more often euthanized instead of cared for. Since then, we’ve been able to dramatically reduce shelter euthanasia rates for cats, thanks in large part to TNR.

When it comes to TNR, a common term used these days to describe the cats is “community cats.” What exactly does that mean?⠀
⠀
In the past, cats living outdoors were commonly called “ferals.” But now we understand many outdoor cats are sociable, not feral. These friendly cats may be lost or abandoned former pets, or simply have a gregarious nature. Plus some cats may act friendly sometimes (especially right before a meal!) and more fearful at others.⠀
⠀
The label “community cats” evolved to avoid drawing distinctions between different types of unowned, free-roaming cats. They may be feral, friendly or anything in between. The term “community” also implies we, as a society, have a collective responsibility for their management and care.⠀

Did you know that Neighborhood Cats’ work extends around the globe? For the last few years, we’ve been supporting @LetsAdoptIndonesia, a group pioneering Trap-Neuter-Return in Indonesia. ⠀
⠀
The Let’s Adopt Indonesia team has now helped thousands of community cats in the bustling city of Jakarta and hundreds more in the Thousand Islands district in Jakarta Bay. They’ve performed TNR at popular public parks, busy train stations, bustling markets, houses of worship, and the University of Indonesia. Today they’re working closely at many sites with local government officials.⠀
⠀
To all our supporters, thanks for helping us make an impact for community cats here and beyond! 🌏⠀ by @nbrhoodcats

🐈‍⬛ Important reminder: not all outdoor cats are the same when it comes to their level of socialization. Many are “feral,” meaning they’re not tame and are fearful of people to varying degrees. Most grew up without much human contact.⠀
⠀
Other outdoor cats may have once had a traditional home and are familiar with people. They may act wary after living on their own for some time, but usually, with enough attention, they warm up and can be good candidates for re-adoption by a new family. ⠀
⠀
While it’s possible for a feral cat to become socialized later in life, this can be a time-consuming, difficult and uncertain process. Often feral cats are best left outdoors, especially if a caring person is watching over them.⠀

Even if you don’t need to be certified in your area to get traps or low-cost surgeries, it’s a good idea to learn best practices. Even old pros will probably pick up a trick or two!⠀

Did you know you can forecast how harsh the upcoming winter will be by how thick your community cats’ fur grows during the fall? At least that’s our experience caring for outdoor cats in a Northeastern climate. When they’re looking extra-bushy in October, watch out! ❄️😸❄️⠀
⠀
As we head into autumn, now is a good time to assess your colony’s winter needs. Don’t wait for the cold to arrive. For example, you can start prepping your winter shelters so you’re ready to go when the temps drop! ⠀
