Great spaces take a great team! And the earlier everyone is involved, the better the outcome. taken in Orange County, California by @nc.design.interiors

Straight outta 1930! It all comes full circle eventually.

It’s funny how the details we once considered outdated are finding their way back into our homes. I like to think of it as flattery hah!

In a world of AI and mass production, I think we’re all craving a little more character, craftsmanship, and history. And sometimes the best inspiration is what’s been there all along.

A little original hardware appreciation from our 1930 Hillvale project.

A little color inspiration from Hood River.

Picking paint colors can be tricky, and veryyyy subjective, but I really believe you can never go wrong pulling inspiration from nature. The colors, textures, and patterns we see around us are the ones that never seem to go out of style. The definition of timeless, if you ask me!

There’s so much research behind biophilic design and how bringing elements of nature into our interiors can improve the way we feel in a space. And sometimes it’s as simple as finding a paint color you love.

Spent last week escaping the California heat and soaking up all the fall colors in Oregon. Safe to say I came home with a camera roll full of inspiration.

Let’s be honest, design and construction are overwhelming. There are hundreds of decisions to make, problems that inevitably come up, and details that all have to work together in the end.

A lot of those decisions can be anticipated and planned for ahead of time, but others happen in real time. Something doesn’t fit quite like we thought, an existing condition throws us a curveball, or what looked good on paper needs to be reconsidered once we’re standing in the space.

I think a big part of good design is knowing how to pivot when those moments happen. Working through the options with the team, thinking about how one change affects everything else, and finding a solution that feels intentional, not like a fix.

Because in the finished space, you should never be able to tell where the original plan ended and the problem solving began.

How are we halfway through September already?! This year has FLOWN by, but so many good things are happening. So, a little brain dump from the last few weeks.

Work lately has been a mix of NC Design Studio projects and quite a bit of contract design work behind the scenes. A lot of that work I can’t share here, but I’ve really loved getting to work across different projects, styles, and teams while continuing to grow my own studio. Lots happening, just not all of it making it to Instagram!

I’m also getting more and more into the weeds of the design development phase for Project Hillvale, which means I’m currently consuming inspiration anywhere and everywhere I can find it. I’m loving leaning into the character and traditional elements of this home while figuring out how to give it a little California flare, as always.

I’ve also been playing around with some new rendering techniques and software lately. In a world where AI is becoming more and more a part of design, I’m finding it really important to keep honing my own skills and getting better at showing clients what is actually possible… without the unrealistic ChatGPT expectations hah!

And FINALLY, I think we’re on the other side of the heat wave over here, so naturally my Pinterest has made the shift into California fall / local summer, and I am very much here for it. The blues and browns have my heart!

Basically, lots of designing, lots of learning, lots happening behind the scenes, and feeling really excited about where things are headed. taken in Newport Beach, California by @nc.design.interiors

I spend an embarrassing amount of time looking at beautiful kitchens, and one thing I’ve noticed is that it’s rarely just the cabinets or countertops that make me save a photo.

It’s usually the smaller details that give the space character and make it feel a little more considered.

So I pulled together a few of the things I’m always looking for when designing a kitchen that feels a bit more exciting!

A little midweek mid-century moment!

A peek behind the scenes of my first walk through of one of our newest Palm Springs projects. This one is primarily furniture + styling, with a little funky, a little mid-century, and lots of personality.

The biggest challenge in this space was figuring out how to break up one HUGE open room into spaces that each felt like their own. We wanted a living room, dining area, pool table with enough room to actually play, AND a viewing room… while still feeling like it’s one home.

So much of the design process happens here. Playing with layouts, thinking through how you’ll actually move through the space, checking clearances, scale, sightlines, and figuring out how to make everything feel connected while still giving each area its own.

Excited to see this one start coming to life!

Hi friends! A quick update from the past few busy weeks over here at NC Design Studio:

A few site visits, my first travel site visit for the very exciting Hillvale project, and plentyyyy of inspiration searching.

Lately I’ve been trying to slow down and pay more attention to the little details and beauty in everyday moments — the things that end up inspiring a space in ways you don’t always expect.

Lots happening behind the scenes, and I’m working on sharing more of it over here!

The part of the process I live for 🤍 pulling materials, colors, and textures that evoke a feeling. Your home doesn’t need a theme — it needs to feel like you. Playing around with materials for a mid-century project here; rich woods, deeper tones, textured fabrics. Nothing final, just the beginning of something beautiful! by @nc.design.interiors
