NCGV is deeply grateful to Jelissa for sharing her powerful survivor story. Rural NC counties have among the highest rates of gun violence every year; we thank Jelissa for giving voice to the what it means to be a survivor living in a rural community.

We are honored to share Jelissa’s story and the voices of survivors across North Carolina. For survivors who are looking for connection and community, NCGV’s Survivor Advocates Circle offers a safe and supportive space to gather, share, and engage in advocacy together. 🧡

Our next virtual gathering is Tuesday, August 18 at 7 PM on Zoom. If you identify as a survivor of gun violence, we invite you to join us.

This Gun Violence Awareness (aka Wear Orange) day, we are sharing survivor Fon Dockery’s story:

Jenesis was only 8 years old with a smile that still lights up rooms, a love so sincere and welcoming. She was bright, joyful, creative, and full of life. Jenesis had a future she deserved to grow into. But, on July 25th, 2023, I dropped off my two beautiful innocent daughters Jenesis, and Amara, 5 years old, at their babysitter’s home. Traumatically, that same day, I would only pick up one daughter, Amara.

In a single moment, just 4 days away from Jenesis’ 9th birthday, our entire world changed when another child in the home accessed an unsecured gun. Jenesis’ death continues to impact our family and those who love and know her.

What happened to Jenesis didn’t just impact our household. It rippled through our community. This is not just my story. This is a community story. This is a North Carolina story. And for far too many of you, this is your story too.

I Wear Orange because I hope that my story prevents another family from walking through what we are enduring. This is why I work with NCGV–to make sure not one more of our loved ones is taken by gun violence.”

We honor Jenesis’s memory and Fon’s courage in sharing their story. Wear Orange Day is a reminder that behind every statistic is a child, a family, and a life forever changed.

Last night we were honored to attend an event with a national gun violence prevention champion in the Senate, Senator Chris Murphy (@senchrismurphy). He was one of the architects of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022, the first major gun violence prevention bill passed by Congress in nearly 30 years. Thank you, Senator Murphy, for working to keep communities safe throughout the country. by @ncagainstgv

Celebrating culture. Protecting futures.

During Latine Heritage Month, we celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latine communities—and reaffirm that every community deserves safety.

In North Carolina, young Hispanic/Latino males ages 15–34 were nearly four times as likely to die by gun homicide as their white counterparts, based on finalized CDC data for 2024.

Honoring these communities means investing in their futures. Join us in advocating for community-led violence prevention and resources that help young people thrive.

Gun violence prevention can start with investing in communities.

Access to good jobs, healthy food, mental health resources, safe spaces and strong community programs such as CVI programs all help create the conditions where people can thrive.

Prevention is bigger than one solution. Community investment matters.

Today, we honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and recognize the violence perpetrated against them throughout the history of the Americas.

Our work to end violence includes acknowledging this history and the lasting harm of colonization. Allyship means listening to Indigenous voices, supporting Indigenous leadership, and working together for safer communities.

Recognition today. Commitment every day. by @ncagainstgv

Continuing our look at how gun violence isn’t one problem with one solution—or one means of prevention.

Food insecurity can play a significant role in community violence, often intersecting with financial stress, limited resources, and community disinvestment.

If we’re serious about prevention, we have to address basic needs—including making sure people can put enough healthy food on the table. That means fully funding and protecting programs like Food and Nutrition Services (SNAP), WIC, and SUN Bucks that help North Carolina families access nutritious food.

Understanding these connections helps us think bigger about what it really takes to build safer communities: investing in people, meeting basic needs, and supporting the programs that help communities thrive.

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.

In 2023, 980 firearm-related deaths in NC were suicides - a 35% increase over the previous 10 years.*

Behind that number are people, families, and communities—and a reminder that suicide prevention must be part of the conversation about gun violence prevention.

Suicide is preventable. Creating time and distance between someone in crisis and access to a firearm can save a life. Safe firearm storage, access to mental health support, and knowing the warning signs are all important pieces of prevention.

Today, we remember those impacted and we stand with those who are struggling, and recommit to creating safer communities where help and hope are within reach.

When you think about gun violence, do you think about suicide?

We need to. More than half of gun deaths in the U.S. are suicides, which means we can’t talk about gun violence prevention without talking about suicide prevention. (Source: CDC)

This Suicide Prevention Month, let’s make it part of the conversation. Check in with the people you love, take signs of crisis seriously, and practice secure firearm storage.

Secure storage means keeping firearms locked and unloaded in a safe or lock box, with ammunition stored and locked separately.

Suicide prevention is gun violence prevention.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

On the second day of school, a handgun was found in a student’s backpack and ammunition with another student at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability in Durham.

We don’t yet know how the firearm was obtained. But we do know this: YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HAVE EASY ACCESS TO GUNS!

Safe storage matters. Firearms should be unloaded and locked up with ammunition stored and locked separately.

Our kids should be able to go to school to learn—not to fear gun violence. We can do better, North Carolina.
