The North Carolina State Board of Elections adopted four proposed rules targeting absentee voting, voter ID, recount rules and voting site sound amplification.

In particular, the proposed restrictions on amplified sound near voting sites could suppress traditions like Party at the Polls, Souls to the Polls, and campus mobilizations led by HBCUs, Divine Nine organizations, and faith communities that have helped generations of voters overcome barriers and build community around the ballot box.

North Carolinians deserve election policies that are accessible, transparent, and fair while ensuring every eligible voter can participate without unnecessary obstacles.

These rules have the risk of creating additional barriers to voting for communities that have historically faced obstacles to fully participating in our democracy. We believe these changes are suppressive and risk making it more difficult for eligible North Carolinians to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

North Carolina Black Alliance and Advance Carolina join our HBCUs, Divine Nine, faith, and community partners in protecting these longstanding traditions and building the foundations that strengthen our democracy and encourage all North Carolinians to stay informed, participate in the public rulemaking process, and make their voices heard.

Fresh research from @hitstrategies supports that. The buck doesn’t stop with voting. But a lot of the stuff we need does start there.

Student voters deserve access, not obstacles.‼️ Removing early voting sites from NCAT and UNCG cuts thousands of young voices out of the democratic process, especially Black students who rely on campus polling places to make their voices heard. Barriers to the ballot aren’t just policy choices; they shape whose communities get represented and whose don’t. ⚖️

BREAKING 🚨Guilford County’s Board of Elections just voted 4-1 to cut early voting access at NC A&T — the nation’s largest HBCU — along with UNC Greensboro and GTCC, despite students and teachers showing up again and again to demand the campus sites used in 2024 stay in place.

This pattern isn’t new. The board’s 2022 map excluded every campus site too, but students fought and won access back in 2024. Now it’s gone, even as the board adds new locations elsewhere.

North Carolina has a long history of building voter barriers near HBCU campuses. Cutting sites that serve young and Black voters, while expanding access elsewhere, raises real questions about who these sites serve.

Since the vote was not unanimous, it now heads to the State Board of Elections to have the last word.

The late Rep. John Lewis left us to become an ancestor six years ago today. In his honor, we commit to getting into good, necessary trouble. But we are also reminded of his words about finding hope and keeping the faith even when times were rough.

We are living in a moment that demands we all find something that grounds us and keeps us going. During a 1985 interview for the Eyes on the Prize series, Lewis shared what kept him going even in dark moments.

BREAKING 🚨 The North Carolina State Board of Elections just adopted a rule restricting “amplified sound” near polling locations, targeting Souls to the Polls, Party at the Polls, and Student March to the Polls.

For years, Black churches in Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte have used music and transportation to turn early voting into a celebration.

From the mountains to the coast, Party at the Polls has made voting feel safe for communities who have every reason not to trust the system.

And at NC A&T, Duke, WCU, and NC Central, student marches have turned hundreds of young Black and marginalized students into voters.

They may call this an adjustment to the “buffer zone”, but this is a ban on direct organizing, period.
