Today, we celebrate #NationalFarmersDay, with great appreciation for the farming families of Western North Carolina. Thank you for your dedication, and for passing your knowledge down to the next generation. Thank you for the opportunity to showcase your work each year at the Fair. by @ncmountainstatefair

🍎🐄📺More than 200 eighth graders from across Haywood County Schools visited @nc_agriculture’s Mountain Research Station to get a glimpse of their future.

The Waynesville facility hosted Farm Bureau Career Day, giving groups of students a chance to see agriculture in action from areas across NCDA including the Fair, along with local farmers, @ncwildlife, @haywoodswcd, and @haywoodemc.

“I never knew you could get a job flying a drone to survey farmland,” said Cesar, a student at Canton Middle School. “That was cool to see.”

Students encountered a cow that’s part of a research project to improve the health of herds across the state and learned the link between aquaculture and the fountain of youth.

“Fish are used in some products that people use to keep their skin looking good,” shared Aubrey, an eighth grader at Bethel Middle School. “That’s another part of the business.”

The kids also discovered uses for various varieties of locally grown apples, and how pictures and videos help farmers market their products.

“I really like photography, so that was something new I learned,” said Brantley, another Bethel student. “It was cool seeing the connection between that and farming.”

Presenters shared with eighth graders that when students get to high school, they can continue exploring careers through classes such as animal science, horticulture, and marketing.

“This is a great way to showcase the many career possibilities with our department, our partner agencies, and our local farmers,” said Kyle Miller, the Mountain Research Station Superintendent. “There are many pathways they may not have known about until this event. This day gets them thinking about what’s ahead, and what jobs match their interests. We hope to grow future leaders who may one day serve farming families and others right here in North Carolina.”

During the Fair, a team from North Carolina @baptistsonmission set up a mobile medical/dental clinic at the WNC Agricultural Center. Medical professionals donated their time to offer care to traveling workers who may find it hard to see a provider.

“The people we serve here are so incredibly kind and thankful, and excited to see us," said Katha Bowman. She’s been volunteering with Baptists on Mission for the last 14 years. “I enjoy talking to everyone, finding out where they’re from, and hearing about their families. It is a true blessing to be able to help.”

In addition to the volunteers, dental hygiene instructors from @abtech_cc and their students come to assist while the clinic is set up at the Fair.

🧶Throughout September, local knitters, crocheters, and quilters have been busy with their needles to help their neighbors.

The Mountain State Fair was once again participated in Caps and Covers for Cancer. Generous craftspeople created 1,042 caps and 140 warm covers to donate to cancer patients in a campaign supported by the @southeasternanimalfiberfair and @novanthealth. Asheville Radiology Associates provides the yarn, and the finished products are distributed to patients through Messino Cancer Centers.

“A 94-year-old woman in Franklin heard about the project, and we delivered yarn to her,” said Christine Price of Novant Health. “She made 40 caps to donate. It’s generosity like that which makes this project especially heartwarming.”
