New vinyl from @joehisaishi.official @dgclassics in at KPAC 88.3 FM! We love sharing music in all formats, but there’s something special about sitting down to enjoy a vinyl record, front-to-back.

(Plus, the vinyl-size liner notes are easier to read at my age than a CD booklet! 😄)

100 years ago this year, the original Brown Derby restaurant opened at 3427 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Now, all that remains is the replica—a darn good one at that, with its period decor and authentic menu with the original Cobb Salad—at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. Have you ever been to the restaurant, either at WDW or in California back when it existed, prior to 1985?

The Mexican Canyon Trestle near Cloudcroft, NM was built in 1899, rises 52 feet off the canyon floor and is one of seven remaining trestles built by the Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway. It is also the most well-preserved, and is worth a stop to marvel at the engineering and imagine what traveling these switchbacks might have been like over a century ago.

It is easily accessible from U.S. 82, or from a nearby nature trail that also includes a scenic overlook.

This bicentennial-era nightlight I got when I was 3 years old is still at my parents’ house. Will it last until the tricentennial? Maybe one of my kids will take possession and carry it into America’s fourth century.

Memorial stone at a picnic area along U.S. 281 southbound near Spring Branch. The sign, dated 1936, says the land for the site was “Donated for park purposes to the State Highway Department of Texas” by Hermann Knibbe in memory of the Knibbe family. Heinrich Dietrich “Hermann” Knibbe” (1850-1940) was born in New Braunfels to father Dietrich, an early German pioneer in Comal County.

This month marks the 30th anniversary of the release of my college band’s cassette album, “Stray Toasters Have Reflective Surfaces.” Recorded live in San Antonio at the now lost to time N. St. Mary’s Brewing Company, it’s a pretty wild and ramshackle collection of songs and improv jams. May 1996 also marked our last gig*, at the former Borracho’s (now Bar Loretta) on Beauregard St. in King William. I will always remember the fun I had playing with @briancoxinaustin @montycraigguitar and many other Toaster alumni.
