Oh my gourd, it's already a new month! 🍂 Meet November's graduate student of the month...Claude McLeod! Hometown: Chapel Hill, NC Previous degrees: BS Biological Engineering, NC State Who is your advisor, and what is your research topic?: Dr. Lucie Guertault is my advisor. We are using hydraulic modeling to analyze the temporal dynamics of nitrate removal in streams and to compare treatment before and after completed stream restoration projects. What first made you interested in this field?: Dr. Birgand's course on biogeochemistry helped me to find an interest in denitrification and how it may be optimized in natural systems. I have always had an interest in streams and natural water systems. What is a song you have had in rotation recently? Mayonaise - Smashing Pumpkins by @ncstate_bae
Fall looks good on Weaver Labs 🍂 Have a safe weekend, #BAEPack! by @ncstate_bae
Want to learn more about BAE's academic programs? You're in luck because we'll be at NC State's Open House this Saturday, October 24, from 9-2!🐺📚 We hope to see you there! by @ncstate_bae
What can you actually do with a Biological and Agricultural Engineering Technology degree? 🚜 In this episode of Beyond BAE, Tommy Stephenson sits down with BAET alumna Taylor Cross to talk about how she landed her job as a precision agriculture specialist at CNH Industrial. “I remember when I first got this job, I was still reflecting on some of those notes, study guides and textbooks from NC State, from the BAET program,” Cross says. 🧰 Discover how the close-knit mentorship between BAE professors and students helps bridge the gap between the classroom and real-world career success. Carve out some time to read about our graduate student for the month of October! 🎃🍂 Meet Sophia Hasapis! Hometown: Lillington, NC Previous degrees: Biological Engineering- Bioprocessing Concentration from NCSU Who is your advisor, and what is your research topic?: Dr. Mahmoud Sharara is my advisor. My research focuses on waste management, in-barn gas concentrations, and the environmental performance of finishing swine production systems. Through a live animal trial, I quantify manure generation, characterize manure composition, and measure gas concentrations to better understand and improve the environmental sustainability of swine production. We aim to identify the factors that contribute to projects success in large storm events. What first made you interested in this field?: I first became interested in BAE after learning more about the department during an info session in my E 101 class. Learning about the department and its focus on solving agricultural and environmental challenges through engineering aligned with the interests I had when I entered college. Fun fact? I have 2 cats, one named Cheeto and one named Maple by @ncstate_bae
On Friday, North Carolina State University’s chapter of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers hosted its annual career fair, featuring 36 companies. 💡🐺 It was great to see many familiar faces among Biological and Agricultural Engineering alumni now working in the industry during a productive afternoon of networking and reconnection. 🤝 by @ncstate_bae
Last Friday we celebrated two outstanding BAE alumni! At this year's CALS Alumni Awards, Darrell Westmoreland was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus, and Randall Etheridge was named an Outstanding Young Alumnus. 🐺 We are so proud they are members of our #BAEPack! by @ncstate_bae
Explaining your research to a broad audience can be tricky, but it's an essential ability researchers must have!💬 To sharpen this skill, our Graduate Student Association hosted a two-minute purpose competition yesterday where students had to explain their research in two minutes to a panel of judges ranging from a kindergartner to a 24-year-old. It was an afternoon filled with new knowledge, fun prizes and lots of Capri Suns! Congratulations to our fabulous winners!🏅 by @ncstate_bae
Last week students showcased their summer internships, research and study abroad experiences at the CALS SHINES event. 🌟🐺 Students from BAE presented on how their experiences are preparing them for the future. Also, students from other departments shared about their participation in programs led by BAE faculty. 👏 by @ncstate_bae
Tucked away off Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh, North Carolina, researchers are trapping greenhouse gas and turning it into a product with a ready market. 🐺💡 At NC State University’s Compost Facility and Research Cooperative, Pablo Ortiz Paciello, a graduate student in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering’s Biocarbon Utilization and Sequestration (BUS) Lab, is demonstrating a patent-pending technology to capture carbon emissions directly at the compost pile. 💨 Backed by funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Cotton Incorporated, Ortiz’s research and related technology aims to collect carbon dioxide before it can enter the atmosphere — and trap it inside mineral carbonate compounds as a value-added product used to clean wastewater. Our graduate student spotlight this month is unbe-leaf-able! 🍂 Meet Kevin Essig 🌊 Hometown: Wake Forest, NC Previous degrees: BS in Bio and Ag engineering at NC State Who is your advisor, and what is your research topic?: Dr. Barbara Doll, I am studying stream resilience and recovery after Hurricane Helene in previously restored streams. We aim to identify the factors that contribute to project success in large storm events. What first made you interested in this field?: I've always loved being outside and exploring the water and I found stream restoration to be a great way to enjoy the outdoors while helping to repair what we have impacted. Fun Fact: I have a 12 year old snake and two fish tanks! by @ncstate_bae
Biological engineers know how to measure flow in streams, stormwater pipes, wetlands or even in gutters. The units are typically measured in cubic feet per second or liters per second. But what about tiny flows, 1,000 times smaller, that we encounter during our experiments? Izzy Hedges and Georgia Reichling, rising seniors in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, turned to new technique! They designed a tipping-pipe system inspired by a Japanese Shishi-Odoshi bamboo water fountain! They 3D printed the parts in Weaver Labs and used the electronics from an old tipping bucket rain gauge to automatically count the number and timing of the tips, and voilà! BAE now has a system to continuously measure tiny flows less than 10 milliliters per second. 🐺💡 The flowmeter is part of a larger project aimed at understanding how denitrification removes nitrate in watersheds. François Birgand, director of BAE graduate programs and professor, is designing lab experiments to understand how natural cleaning processes interact with polluted rainwater before it reaches rivers and streams. 🌊 by @ncstate_bae
