What a great day of STEM learning at CMAST! ❤️🐺🔬

We had 15 incredible K–5 educators representing seven different counties join us for our newest STEM to Your Doorstep training!

The day was filled with lots of laughter, great conversations, hands-on exploration, and so many good ideas for bringing these tools into elementary classrooms. Teachers explored Xploris probeware, Beaver Bot, STEM literature, makerspace materials, and more, all while thinking about meaningful ways to get students investigating, creating, problem-solving, and talking about science.

And the best part? This was just the beginning! Now that these teachers are trained, they have access to borrow this equipment and put it directly into the hands of their students.

15 teachers. 7 counties. A whole lot of STEM headed into classrooms across Eastern NC. ❤️

👀 Stay tuned for upcoming STEM to Your Doorstep workshop dates!

Last month, six fourth-year NC State veterinary students split time between NC State's Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) and the Karen Beasley@seaturtlehospital in Surf City for a clinical rotation on sea turtle medicine and rehabilitation.

Dr. Craig Harms, a faculty member in the College of Veterinary Medicine and based at CMAST, has been offering the 2-week-long course on Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Medicine for 20 plus years. The 4th year veterinary students travel from Raleigh to CMAST to obtain hands-on experience in husbandry, disease diagnosis and treatment in rehabilitating sea turtles.

At the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center, they conducted exams on the sea turtle patients, evaluated them for release, and participated in the public sea turtle release.

This conservation work for endangered sea turtles is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. (ES Permit 26ST05)

In Spring 2027, a special class of undergraduates will be bound for Morehead City, NC to participate in an intensive hands-on semester in marine science. For almost ten years, NC State undergrads have studied and worked on the coast, getting their feet wet and their hands sandy alongside top professional researchers and graduate students.

Congratulations to Dr. Brendan Runde for receiving the 2026 CALS Outstanding Young Alumni Award for the Department of Applied Ecology.

"I spent seven transformative years at CMAST. The guiding principle behind research in the Buckel Lab – that quality science can immediately and meaningfully influence resource management – has continued to motivate my work. Studying fish for the sake of people is what makes this career fulfilling," said Runde.

After receiving his M.S. in 2017 and his Ph.D. in 2021, both in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology, Runde is now a marine scientist for The Nature Conservancy. With over 40 publications and 600 citations, he balances national policy work with field-based science, nurturing a love he found at NC State for developing applied solutions to complex fisheries conservation problems.

Ph.D. candidate at CMAST and NOAA Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar, Bethany Wager, traveled to Alpena, Michigan to explore Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This trip was part of the Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar retreat, where they emphasized science communication training and the importance of protecting maritime heritage sites. Wager had a smile on her face the whole time as she toured both the Portland Wreck and the Octantis, a research expedition ship, and she saw a submarine for the first time! by @ncstate_cmast

Please join us in thanking Dr. Carol Price for her decade of dedicated work at NC State’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST), and in wishing her the best on her next chapter!

In October, Dr. Price will join the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Charleston, OR, as a Fish Biologist Supervisor.

During her ten years at CMAST, she taught Marine Conservation Biology and mentored more than 70 students on research and field conservation, including sand tiger shark photo-identification, headstarting gopher frogs, Crystal skipper population field work and animal behavior projects.

“The most rewarding part of being at CMAST has been working with dozens of students. It has been a joy and privilege to watch them learn about the ocean and our coastal communities and become dedicated to conserving our natural resources," reflected Price. by @ncstate_cmast

Eclair was stranded June 7, 2026 at Caswell Beach suffering from boat strike injury. The turtle was rescued by Caswell Beach Sea Turtle Watch and brought to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center for treatment. The turtle was transported to CMAST June 29 so Dr. Harms and team could perform flipper amputation surgery, then returned to KBSTC for ongoing rehabilitative care. Kemp’s ridley sea turtles are the most endangered sea turtle species.

More boats and sea turtles are sharing the water at the NC coast in the summertime, which is leading to sea turtle injuries.

High speed impacts from boats cause fractures of the shell and skull and internal damage from blunt trauma (boat hull) and sharp trauma (propeller) which can be fatal.

📞 If you see a sea turtle in distress call the NC Wildlife Resources Commission sea turtle hotline (252-241-7367) to initiate a rescue to save the turtle.

🌊 What you can do:

-Wear polarized sunglasses to make it easier to see sea turtles (and other animals) in the water.

-Designate a spotter to watch for sea turtles and other wildlife.

-Keep a sharp eye out because sea turtles are hard to see and you might not even feel the impact.

-Go slow when you don’t have to go fast.

-Avoid boating near sea turtle feeding grounds (e.g., seagrass meadows) and nearshore areas where nesting sea turtles are likely to come ashore.
