S. Frank and Doris Culberson Distinguished Professor Orlin Velev is being recognized for his outstanding scientific contributions to colloid chemistry!

Velev is the recipient of the 2027 American Chemical Society Award in Colloid Chemistry. "This award recognizes a large body of multidisciplinary research performed in my group since I joined NC State University,” he said. by @ncstatecbe

Tangled seaweed vs. ocean microplastics 🌊🥊

Capturing microplastics in water has been a challenge because plastic particles come in many different sizes. Researchers led by Prof. Orlin Velev were inspired by floating seaweed mats and “Neptune balls" to create superadhesive meshes that trap large millimeter-scale plastics & tiny nanoscale particles from freshwater and saltwater alike! a researcher in a white lab coat and purple gloves holds a piece of white mesh in front of the camera by @ncstatecbe

Science, culture, and community! 🧪✨

The @ncsu_cbe_gsa team had a great time at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for Día de la Ciencia y la Cultura! 🔬🌎 They brought hands-on engineering demos to life, sharing our passion for chemical and biomolecular engineering with curious minds of all ages. Big thanks to the volunteers and everyone who stopped by the outreach booth to experiment and celebrate science with us! NC State has been granted a $20 million award from the National Science Foundation to integrate AI, robotics and autonomous labs in order to advance scientific discovery in chemistry and materials science research.

The research initiative is called Self-driving Platforms for Expedited Experimental co-Design in solution phase chemistry and materials science, or SPEED. It builds on NC State's leadership in “self-driving labs” — an emerging research model that combines AI and robotic systems to design, conduct and analyze experiments.

Self-driving labs offer remote access to researchers and students — opening more opportunities for them to engage with advanced experimental infrastructure. They can change not only what we discover, but who gets to participate in discovery, and NC State is at the forefront of this innovation. by @ncstatecbe
