Bringing ancient history to life! 🏺

On September 18, two remarkable artifacts from our History Department’s Roman Archaeology Lab took center stage at the VIP reception for this year’s The Human Factor event.

The display featured two pieces excavated by NC State teams under the direction of the late Prof. Tom Parker:

Ceramic Cup (1st–3rd century AD): Excavated in Petra, Jordan.

Ceramic Pitcher (9th–10th century AD): Excavated in Aqaba, Jordan.

Faculty members Tate Paulette, Jordan Rogers, and Kate Grossman (Sociology and Anthropology) submitted the artifacts for the exhibition. During the reception, Paulette and Grossman were on hand to guide guests through the display, sharing the fascinating stories and historical context behind each piece.

We love seeing our department's ongoing archaeological research and field heritage shared with our community! 🏛️🔍 taken in NC State University by @adillahunt_

It was a full day of stepping back in time for our NC History students! 📜✨

Last Friday, Prof. Chris Laws took his class on a busy, hands-on field trip to historic Hillsborough, NC. The group packed an incredible amount of local history into one day:

Occaneechi Village: Explored a replica of an indigenous village to learn about early regional culture and community.

Historic Cemetery: Visited landmark gravesites and stopped for a group photo at the final resting place of William Hooper, one of North Carolina's signers of the Declaration of Independence! 📸

Hillsborough History Museum: Dived into local exhibits showcasing centuries of area history.

Regulator Monument: Stopped by the monument commemorating the colonial War of the Regulation, accompanied by History M.A. alum Kelly Arnold.

Historic Masonic Lodge: Wrapped up the day with a guided tour led by Michael Verville.

A huge thank you to everyone who hosted and guided our students. Field trips like these bring the history of North Carolina right off the page! 🏛️🌲 by @adillahunt_

Summer 2026 was anything but a break for our very own Dr. Ajamu Dillahunt-Holloway! From keynote speeches to community panels and environmental advocacy, he spent the season bringing history to life across North Carolina.

Take a look at what Dr. Dillahunt-Holloway accomplished over the break:

July 4: Delivered the keynote address at the Town of Carrboro’s annual Fourth of July reading of Frederick Douglass’ landmark essay, "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?"

July 8: Guest-curated and moderated the "Freedom Books: A Legacy of Resistance" panel at the Gregg Museum for the Community Stories: Sustaining North Carolina Black Heritage exhibition. The event drew over 150 attendees to honor Raleigh’s first African American bookstore, resulting in official city and county proclamations declaring July 8, 2026, as Freedom Books Day!

July 24: Joined nurses and environmental activists outside the NC General Assembly in Raleigh, speaking out against Duke Energy's data center tax breaks and customer rate hikes in response to the state's AI roadmap.

July 27: Addressed 36 emerging student leaders at the North Carolina Black Alliance’s 12th Annual Think Tank at NC State, helping shape civic engagement strategies inspired by the historic Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

August 19: Featured in "A Conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates" at the historic Hayti Heritage Center in Durham.

We are so proud to have faculty who actively bridge academic scholarship, local history, and community activism. Drop a 👏 in the comments to congratulate Dr. Dillahunt-Holloway on a powerhouse summer! by @adillahunt_

Get ready, NCSU History community! 📚✨

We are beyond excited to host Dr. Rashauna Johnson for an unforgettable evening of history, memory, and powerful storytelling.

In Sweet Home Feliciana, Dr. Johnson bridges the deeply personal with the historical, tracing her own Louisiana roots to unpack how local legacies of slavery, colonialism, and Jim Crow shape the broader American experience. It’s a vital look at endurance, resistance, and the stories hidden right in our own backyard.

Whether you're a student, history buff, or just love a compelling narrative, you won't want to miss this conversation.
