Peru - May 2025 - Officer and I was told their version of SWAT attempting a stop when shots came from the car.

I commend the guy with body cam for trying to be in the best position. However, shootouts on busy roadways with civilian vehicles in the background (and foreground) is dangerous.

I think there is a lot of plain clothes officers involved also.

Looks like one guys threw a banger when it stopped.

Then the typical 360 surround by officers when it stopped.

King County Tac 30 making arrests.

I had to find the lesson plan and training outline for a newer guy after an OIS that occurred on an open air takedown.

It’s often over looked in training behind vehicle tactics and CQB, etc. but it happens a lot more often especially on fugitive work.

7/24/26- MDSO Homicide Street Violence Task Force (HSVTF) and the Special Response Team (SRT) were serving a firearms-related search warrant at the residence. SRT identified themselves and announced multiple times that they were serving a search warrant at the residence. After making entry, a subject exited the bedroom with a firearm in his hand. An SRT deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the subject. An SRT Medic assessed the subject, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) arrived and determined he was deceased. A second subject, also named in the search warrant, was taken into custody, and other individuals that were inside the residence were safely removed. Detectives recovered the subject’s firearm.

17 year old Suspect killed at scene with firearm. Suspect was a convicted felon on probation for firearms violations and gang member. He was also charged with murder last year. #swat #cqb #swatteam # by @ncswat

Hernando County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot on Thursday, September 10, while serving a narcotics-related search warrant at a Spring Hill home. Body-camera footage shows one deputy calling out that he was hit after gunfire broke out, the deputy survived and was released from the hospital, and suspect Anthony Cusati was arrested on attempted-murder and related charges.

August 2022 - Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team, a regional team, executed a hostage rescue from an explosive breach on a subject holding two adults hostage. They were barricaded inside. This occurred after about 10 hrs of negotiations. The suspect fired on the front entry team with a shotgun striking the ballistic shield. 4 officers took hits from the shotgun but only 2 went to the hospital. 3 officers returned fire killing the suspect. by @ncswat

In the posted video, you can see the adrenaline wave move through the officer.

The shift is visible in posture, speed, voice, and attention, thats the delay of action after the incident. Once that wave begins, we are not fully free from its physiological and psychological consequences. We may retain agency, but our access to judgment becomes narrower, less flexible, and more dependent on what has already been trained.

Extreme stress does not turn an untrained person into a hidden expert. It compresses cognition. Nuance recedes. Sequence degrades. Peripheral information disappears. What remains most available is habit formed through training.

Confidence is not competence. Intention is not capability.

Moral certainty does not create skill, restraint, or discernment at the moment it is needed.

The stoic question is not, “What would I do if everything went wrong?” It is, “What capacities have I built before anything goes wrong?”

Preparation creates a distinction comfort conceals. When others freeze, retreat, or wait for someone else, the prepared person may still act. Not because they are worth more, but because competence gives conscience an instrument. Doing the right thing when the cost is real requires more than wanting the right outcome.

The idea of “rising to the occasion” is psychologically imprecise. Acute threat narrows attention, overloads working memory, and weakens cognitive flexibility. A new skill requires sequencing, error monitoring, inhibition, and adaptation. Under severe stress, those functions become less available, not more.

Crisis does not manufacture capacity. It selects from capacity already installed.

Under pressure, people do not rise to an imagined version of themselves. They fall toward their level of preparation.

The moment of crisis is not a stage for becoming.

It is an audit.

It asks one question without mercy, when thought narrows, fear arrives, and consequence becomes immediate, what remains of you that has been built to hold? by @ncswat
