You know how much I love light momentum cars and how they help improve your skills. It’s the main reason I got the Miata ND – to learn how to properly drive a car! High horsepower cars let you cheat when you miss a turn (on a closed circuit), and modern electronic aids make you think you’re a good driver. That’s where Miatas, BRZ/GR86, etc come in. Get one of these and you’ll improve your skills. And then you’ll realize how much fun they are!

And if you get a Miata, the enthusiasts will welcome you, just like how the Porsche community welcomes newcomers

Southern California offers the relative freedom of choosing your setting year-round; one can wake up in the morning, start driving, and be swimming at the beach or playing on a snow-capped mountain by noon. Big Bear is one of those mountains. While snow isn’t around the entire year, its annual departure welcomed our pavement-dwelling pack to new heights.

We escaped a hot day in Highland with our lengthy hill climb. There aren’t too many places to park a couple dozen cars up there, so our cavalcade made just one stop to stretch our legs before starting the descent.

The last bit of the drive to our final turnout was curvy, punchy, and swift thanks to the considerate drivers who used turnouts kindly. Donuts and good hangs were had until the sun dropped, and the drive home was a proper epilogue.

The change of seasons flies a bit under the radar in Southern California, and exploring roads in different quarters makes it more obvious. It hasn’t been too long since we last cruised Palomar, but this was a different experience from our last visit during winter.

We were fortunate to find our ideal turnout completely vacant this time, so we could hang out over the valley before continuing a long afternoon drive.

Though the beach parking lot was packed now that the world is ‘open,’ we were able to finish off as planned with just enough space for our final hangs before driving into the sunset.

Fueled by tacos and cupcakes, this month we revisited ACH to celebrate a delightful first year.

Over a dozen lovely roads conquered, a handful of streets invaded, sunsets chased, track time, and an unforgettable road trip. Hundreds of new friendships formed. Thousands of miles traveled. Countless smiles planted. Surges of thrills and joy, all in the midst of a pandemic.

To everyone that has participated, thank you.
Thank you for leaving your comfort zone and showing up. For respecting others and driving gracefully. For picking up trash and conserving our shared spaces. For bringing your energy and passion to the table. For inspiring onlookers, local and around the world.

It’s been a while since we’ve done a drive down south, so we went as far south as we could go!

We hung out under the comfort of overcast skies in Escondido and had the opportunity to welcome a few new members from San Diego, and took a long canyon drive to admire the valleys close to the Mexican border before our final destination on Sunrise Highway.

The hill climb became eerie as our visibility dropped to just a few dozen feet, and the top of the crest awaited with torrential fog. Conditions were less than ideal for our usual sunset photo ritual, but many braved the cold and wind for a while before enjoying the inevitably fun drive home.

April’s ND Sunday was the farthest most of us have gone, but a worthwhile drive to welcome spring. The blazing sun made a heck of an appearance, but that didn’t stop a large group of us from meeting up and having a great time.

We rendezvoused for food and hangs in the Outlets at Tejon, then cruised some country roads before starting the hill climb up the canyon. It’s fun to see countless NDs disappear one behind the other [ahead or in your rearview], then see them all again when it’s time to make a turn.

The Kern River nourishes a beautiful landscape all the way to Lake Isabella. A massive turnout accommodated a higher capacity than normal, so we got to welcome some new friends and take lots of photos before a spirited drive down at dusk.
