Artist. Songwriter. Still making records.
Still figuring it out.
Conversations about songs, creativity & the life around them.

POSTS STORIES REELS

I came to Nashville knowing who I was. Somewhere along the way, I got so busy trying to give everybody else what they wanted that I sometimes forgot what I had to give.

I love writing songs for other people. But making my own records reminds me why I started doing this in the first place.

I have a feeling I’m not the only person who’s experienced this.

The Nashville music business has given me some stories you couldn’t make up. 😂

But when you’re in the middle of a bad day, sometimes all you need is somebody who understands.

I still love writing songs. And I love the people who write them.#nashvillesongwriter #musicbusiness #songwriting #creativelife #songwriterlife by @nealcoty

In Nashville, MAYBE is hope without a warranty. 😂

A strong hold, a possible cut, a record deal that might happen. After 40 years in the music business, I’ve learned not to count on something I never had.

But here’s the funny thing. I still believe in the next song.

And if you’re still writing, I bet you do, too.

Because maybe this’ll be the one that changes everything.

Somebody once opened a door for me that changed the direction of my life.

But the greatest gift wasn’t the opportunity. It was what she taught me about giving somebody else one.

Their success doesn’t take a thing away from yours.

And sometimes, opening a door changes two lives.

There’s more great music being made than any of us could ever hear, and I love that everybody gets a chance to make it.

I just wonder how many songs we’d absolutely fall in love with if we ever got the chance to hear them. I don't know about you, but I want to hear them.

Only in Nashville can you go on 100 blind dates a year and call it work. 😂

Sometimes there’s chemistry. Sometimes there isn’t. And sometimes you find a creative partner you want to keep making music with for years.

Nobody has to hand you permission to become what you’re already doing.

If you’re writing, learning, getting better, and showing up for the songs…

go ahead and claim it.

You’re a songwriter. You're an artist.

The song stays the same.

We don’t.

That’s why the songs we’ve carried for years can hit us differently every time we come back to them.

Three minutes doesn’t sound like much. Funny how much life can fit inside it. #nashvillesongwriter #musicbusiness #creativelife #songwriter by @nealcoty

Moving week.

Everything we own is in a box, half of it should’ve been thrown away ten years ago, and the cats have filed several complaints with management.

We’re tired, grateful, excited, running mostly on coffee, and pretending we know which box has the important stuff. #nashvillesongwriter #creativelifehappylife #songwriting by @nealcoty

Every generation gets told the old way is over.

Usually, it is.

That doesn’t mean music is.

Somebody needs a song. Go write it. #nashvillesongwriter #musicbusiness #songwriting #songwriter #artistlife by @nealcoty
