Does your toenail feel better after a pedicure, only to start hurting again?

Repeatedly cutting or digging out the sides of your toenail may provide temporary relief without addressing why the discomfort keeps returning.

At NEATEN, we focus on understanding what’s contributing to the discomfort and choosing an approach that prioritizes the long term health of your nails.

The problem isn’t always your toenails. Sometimes it’s the way they’re being cared for.

Understanding the difference between ingrown and involuted toenails helps you ask better questions and make more informed decisions about who you trust to care for your feet.

Is it really an ingrown toenail?

A phone call I received this morning prompted a conversation that I believe is long overdue.

Not every painful or excessively curved toenail is a true ingrown toenail. Yet many consumers seek nail removal without fully understanding what’s causing their discomfort or whether a more conservative approach may be appropriate.

That needs to be discussed.

I’ve decided to begin creating more opportunities for consumers to understand the difference between ingrown and involuted toenails, recognize when professional or medical intervention may be necessary and make more informed decisions about their nail care.

Because knowing what to ask for is just as important as knowing who to trust with your care.

I have a question for consumers:

When you call a nail professional asking them to remove an ingrown toenail, what makes you believe the nail is ingrown? Is it the pain, the pressure, the way the nail looks or something someone previously told you?

I’d genuinely like to understand what leads you to request that particular service.

KNOW. RECOGNIZE. CHOOSE.

Who Told You the Sides Had to Go?

“Can you get that out? It’s hurting on the side.”

Sound familiar?

Maybe you’ve said it during a pedicure. Maybe you’ve had the sides of your toenails cut away for years because you were told they were “ingrown.”

Repeatedly cutting away the sides of a toenail can compromise its natural shape and contribute to a cycle of recurring discomfort.

And sometimes, what feels like an ingrown toenail isn’t an ingrown nail at all. It may be an involuted nail, where the nail curves inward and places pressure on the surrounding skin.

The client shown here experienced years of repeated cutting along the sides of her toenails. Over time, her nails became significantly narrower and more curved.

Rather than continuing to remove the sides, our approach focused on preservation, nail bracing, and ongoing corrective care.

These photos document that process.

Sometimes what you think needs to be removed actually needs to be preserved and guided.

The next time you feel pressure along the side of your toenail, don’t automatically assume something needs to be cut out.

Have you noticed your toenails becoming narrower or more curved over time?

Four years of documented corrective toenail care.

This client’s corrective pedicure journey with me began in September 2022.

Professional maintenance. At-home care. Consistency. Time. And documentation along the way.

The photos tell the story better than a single before and after ever could.

Progress didn’t happen all at once and his journey isn’t finished. I’m still documenting it.

Because corrective care isn’t only about looking at how far there is to go. It’s also about recognizing the direction you’re moving in.

It’s not the distance of the goal. It’s the direction.

When did “ingrown” become the name for all pain along the side of a toenail?

This client told me her toenails didn’t always look this way.

She described a cycle that I continue to hear from clients today: pain along the side of the nail, having the side cut out, experiencing relief, feeling the discomfort return and then asking for more to be removed or “dug out.”

She also told me that as the appearance of her nails changed, she increasingly relied on darker polish to conceal the discoloration. Eventually, black became the color she felt could hide it.

This isn’t about blaming the client. When something brings relief, it makes sense that you may ask for it again especially when you haven’t been given another explanation or shown another approach.

But pain returning does not automatically mean more nail needs to be removed.

And pain along the side of a toenail should not automatically be labeled an “ingrown” simply because that’s the term you’ve become accustomed to using.

This was this client’s first and only visit with NEATEN, so this is not being presented as a completed corrective care case. It documents the condition in which she arrived and the conservative approach taken during that first service.

Her story was documented in March 2022. Years later, I continue to hear versions of the same story.

And that’s why I genuinely want to hear from you.

When you first noticed your toenails changing the color, the thickness, the shape or how much nail was left, what did you believe was causing it?

If you continued receiving the same type of care, what made you continue?

And if you eventually found a different approach and were shown what progress could look like over time, what determined whether you gave your own nails enough time to see that progress?

Was it the time involved? The cost? Wanting an immediate result? Returning to what was familiar? Or something else entirely?

There is no shame in not knowing what you were never taught.

Knowing better helps you choose better care.

Your toenails can look polished and still be telling you something.

If you experience pain or discomfort during a pedicure while the sides or corners of your toenails are being cut out to address what you’ve been told is an “ingrown nail,” pay attention to the pattern.

Cutting deeply down the sides may temporarily relieve the pressure or discomfort. But as the nail grows, the discomfort can return. So the side is cut out again….often going deeper and deeper over time.

And with each repeated removal, more and more of the nail is taken away.

This style of cutting can also contribute to changes in the shape of the nail and how it grows…sometimes contributing to the very problem the cutting is intended to address.

At NEATEN, we don’t believe a thorough pedicure means removing everything that can be removed.

Sometimes the most important decision is knowing what to leave alone.

More removal isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the service is preservation.
