Al Llorens spent his life defending public education and the educators who make it possible.

At #NEARA, we honored him posthumously with our highest honor. His widow, Wanda Llorens, herself a retired educator, accepted on his behalf, keeping his spirit present in every word.

Looking across this room today, I had a powerful realization.

It felt like I was at an NEA event.

The faces. The languages. The cultures. The stories.

They could have been our members.

And in so many ways, they are.

Because our union reflects the beautiful diversity of our nation, and our nation has been built by people from every corner of the world. Our public schools—and the educators who serve in them—reflect our shared humanity.

Today, we welcomed our siblings from Education International to their union home at NEA Headquarters while they took a break from the AFT Convention.

Although we come from different countries and speak different languages, our fight is the same.

Together, we’re organizing to defend public education, strengthen democracy, protect workers’ rights, and ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.

One of my favorite moments wasn’t a speech.

It was watching educators from across the globe pick up paintbrushes and create art together.

Every brushstroke represented hope.

Every banner reflected solidarity.

Every conversation reminded us that our greatest strength isn’t found within the borders of one nation—it’s found in educators standing together across them.

The finished banner says it all:

“Organizing for the World Students Deserve.”

As our Education International President, Mugwena Maluleke, reminds us:

“Education changes people… and people change the world.”

To our Education International family: thank you for your friendship, your courage, and your solidarity. The challenges we face may cross borders—but so does our collective power.

Coalitions build power. 🤝

Honored to join Dr. Stephanie Parra, Jazmin Ramirez, and Tanya Ortiz Franklin at the NALEO Educational Fund Annual Conference to discuss how we safeguard every student’s right to learn.

Our conversation centered on one simple truth:

📚 Public schools educate students—not immigration status.

I also shared my concern that the growing push to privatize public education through voucher schemes isn’t only about funding. It creates a backdoor strategy for eroding the protections established under Plyler v. Doe, which guarantees every child’s right to attend a public school regardless of immigration status.

Protecting public education means protecting both the funding and the constitutional promise that every child belongs.

Thank you to my fellow panelists for modeling what coalition building looks like in action.

Together, we protect students.
Together, we strengthen public education.
Together, we strengthen democracy.

🎨 Make my Toy Story 5 outfit with me while I share my thoughts on tablets and electronic devices as a high school teacher!

Toy Story 5 is a must-see! Not just for the nostalgia, but for the conversation it sparks. The film explores the growing role that tablets, iPads, and other devices play in children’s lives and raises important questions about how technology can influence development, social interaction, and emotional well-being.

Today, many children spend less time playing and socializing face-to-face, while educators and families alike are navigating increasing concerns about attention, emotional regulation, and anxiety. These challenges often make their way into our classrooms.

As an educator, I’ve intentionally reduced the use of devices in my own classroom. I want my students to think critically, create independently, collaborate with one another, and build meaningful connections that are harder to develop when everyone is behind a screen.

Technology is an incredible tool when used intentionally, but teachers witness its benefits and its challenges every single day. That’s why educators should have a seat at the table when schools and policymakers discuss the future of educational technology.

Americans support public education for all. An April 2026 survey found that 75.5% of people across the political spectrum were in strong support of universal education.

These findings align with the precedent set by the 1982 Supreme Court Plyler v. Doe decision that affirmed all public schools in the U.S. must provide an education to all students, regardless of their immigration status.

Our legislators must listen to the people and ensure all children in our communities can get an education. #AllChildrenBelong
