💖 Let’s carry out dubious scientific experiments together! 💖

Princess Bubblegum’s outfit from “What Was Missing” (Bubbline enjoyers know 👀) was a fun short build! I chopped down the full-length skirt that I’d made *ages* ago (for original Bubblegum) and installed horsehair at the hem for a flippy knee-length pleated skirt.

For the jacket, I found the *perfect* pink lining at a fabric reuse store - and a nearly-perfect sweatshirt fleece, which was then overdyed with purple dye to bring the tone closer to what I wanted. The same reuse store also yielded a bit of raspberry dupioni silk - not enough to make A Big Thing, but enough to math out into the lattice smocking detail on the jacket and the verrry approximate dirndl-inspired ribbon trim at the neckline and skirt hem.

Ultimately an outfit built from repurposed fabrics, the bones of an old dress, and pulling a jacket from my own closet to sketch out a makeshift pattern (which I then had to alter anyways because the original jacket had a slight stretch, and the new lining didn’t!) — Peebs might enjoy that ✨

The propensity of the D&D community to shorten “Great Old One warlock subclass” into “GOOlock” is one of my favourite things. Like — behold, a GOOlock! Don’t worry about the shadowy tentacles or the ominous miasma or the nictitating eyes. Isn’t GOOlock such a funny word? ...what’s that? All the freshwater that you touch turns to salt? Must be a side effect of the GOO, ha ha 🦑

This is your sign to go pursue a self-indulgent project, no matter how silly or adolescent or nontraditional it feels. You will have so much fun doing it. You will listen to a truly staggering number of repeats of a single band’s discography and get to call it “research.” You will stand in a Goodwill and scan the rack of men’s jackets with the single criteria “would circa-2000s Gerard Way have worn this.” You will buy a prop dagger on eBay.

(also, you might *finally* get to use up the leftover Locked Tomb bones and teeth rattling around in their pill bottles like cursed maracas)

🌿🌲 HUNTRESS WIZARD MENTION 🌳🌱

I adored the first season of Fiona and Cake, and it’s exciting to hear that Huntress Wizard will be getting more plot time! She’s kept herself aloof to many of the core storylines — only popping in to deliver cool one-liners and be deliberately inscrutable & mysterious — so it will be interesting to see her when she’s not able to do a Cool Jump into the trees and run away from having her motivations and thoughts examined.

I saw an observation recently that there needs to be a scale indicating “how much craft per craft,” with the examples that spinning is actually mostly spinning, sewing is mostly ironing, woodwork is mostly sanding, knitting is mostly math, etc 😆 In my case (since I don’t have a dedicated sewing room or space), sewing *also* has the extra steps of “reorganise your regular desk to get two square feet of open surface, haul up the sewing machine, and clear off your ironing board to use as a cutting table” ...which means that during a busy school year, a lot of the work that I can manage is limited to small handsewing tasks.

Fortunately, I enjoy small handsewing tasks! — which is how you get a greeblie’d-up Howl from someone who functionally lives in a Howl-tier room ✨

I had the pleasure of attending the CGW’s Costume College for the first time last week! With no idea of what to expect, I only packed Mareep for the Gala (with the Black Parade jacket getting recruited for the prior night’s more casual social event, since the MCR concert had been in the earlier half of the same trip).

Mareep as the gala choice left me very glad that I had made the base dress out of a lovely crinkled cotton crepe, which lent itself to *much* more dancing than originally intended for this gijinka. However, this *did* create the situation of a frilly be-ruffled shepherdess trotting up to the DJ and very politely asking if he could please add “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” to the playlist.
(he DID!!)
(our cohort also convinced him to play Hot To Go as the final song of the night, which was another terrific victory)

- sometimes you attend your first-ever stadium concert and feel Every Emotion Ever and then completely forget to take photos until back in the homey foyer of your parents’ place (thanks parents) well after midnight.

- Foundations of Decay was my genuine holy grail song — it is one of my favourites for a LOT of reasons, but I had fully accepted not hearing it live because it didn’t seem sufficiently nostalgia-y for this tour — so when Foundations was pulled up today, it felt like every nerve in my body froze in shock and then lit up all once.

- Actual work time was closer to ten days: scooped a black blazer at Goodwill; took in the shoulders & sides, raised the armscye, and chopped down the length; then raided my motley stash of silver fabrics, trims, and buttons to see what could be refashioned from scraps. The progress photos are less narrative than I’d like, since it was a WHIRLWIND week and a half of nose-to-the-grindstone sewing!

This was an incomparable, incandescent experience. The jacket is actually really fun and sparkley; I’ll get proper photos of it later. I'm working through my Fanime edits and SO excited about this set!! This was a quick impromptu shoot outside the Civic, but the lighting was absolutley perfect and @nebulardisk's stash-fabric Howl jacket is just gorgeous. I'm so glad our schedules aligned and feel so lucky to have gotten to take these photos!!

Had a lovely time at Sakura-con this year! 🔥🌸 WE MADE IT THROUGH 🌸🔥 and I had the realisation that I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a number of wonderful photographers, saved some absolute bangers of images, and then …neglected to share the photos afterwards 😵‍💫 Going to slooooowly work on amending that, so there might be a bit of backposting and reminiscing coming up! (*very* slowly; the day job is quite consuming, so notifications stay off during weekdays 🫡)

Happy Howl-idays ✨

This started as a stash-busting project in October — when I was sent to a professional conference and used my free time in the hotel room to cut out interfacing diamonds & iron them to fabric (keen eyes will note that I also finished EXU Downfall over those nights). The following images are some grievously cropped-down progress photos, but it gives a rough look at assembly over the next few months.

All the fabric, trims, and beads are pulled from my stash, and the *only* new purchases have been the wig and jewellery! (admittedly, some of the gold trims & beads were redirected from stagnant projects, so I might end up repurchasing them when I pick those projects up again 😅)

It’s been fun! I really like doing fiddly detail work, and it’s been so satisfying to finally use up a hodgepodge of fabric remnants and beads.
