Just me and my greens for the foreseeable future.

It’s been months but who’s counting anyway? I love it here. I am home.

“And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see; or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read. Guided by my heritage of a love of beauty and a respect for strength—in search of my mother’s garden, I found my own.”

How do you document space?

Playing with photogrammetry in effort to digitally capture the experience of space around a work.

So often I spend weeks and months on end producing a work only to cover it, protect it and safely stow it away until opportunities to exhibit arise. How can digital and technological advancements extend engagement with a work? Can a 3d scan replicate the experience of walking around a work? Or does it document what an algorithm “sees”?

On the last day of the first month of 2026, I’m reflecting on how the year began and anticipating more art, more opportunities, and more joy as it continues.

I started the year finalizing my 4 month residency through @cltiscreative at @mccollcenter and what a wonderful time it was! From September of last year, the warm and wonderful artists and technicians at the McColl Center welcomed me and helped me to explore new media. I spent time screen printing, hand dyeing fabric, woodworking, sewing, upholstering, and more, all aided by the community at the mccoll center. I cannot thank them enough. And many thanks to @cltiscreative for sponsoring this opportunity.

The culminating piece of my time there, “To Be Held”, continues the incorporation of fine art furniture into the center of my practice. It is an ode to my mother’s love and her handiwork in my life. I’ve been back in Charlotte for nine months now, after having lived in the UK since 2018. The impact of being in her reach cannot be understated. The care she has extended to me, my children, and all who have the pleasure of entering her orbit has been a marvel to witness once again.

To be held by her, in her grasp, warmed by her touch is a gift. Watching her reaffirms my commitment to creating care in spite of violent and uncertain times. Rocking back and forth in the chair, I am soothed, I am comforted, I am at peace, I am at play. I think of words like “love”, “touch”, “family, and most of all “joy”. None of that would be possible for me without the presence of my mother and women like her who decide to extend their hand time and time and time again. Hands that cook greens, dress wounds, do hair, provide shelter, and buy you necessities you forgot were running low. “To Be Held” reminds me that love is a labor. Who’s ready to work?

🚀SPACE PROGRAM CHECK-IN. Tranashea Hyman is a multidisciplinary artist using sculpture, furniture, collage, and more to explore ideas around motherhood, ecology, and Black subjectivity. Drawing from personal narratives and communal experiences, she often depicts abstracted figures of herself and others to deeply engage questions around selfhood and imaginative world building.

In 2024, @necessaryforms obtained her Masters in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in London, England. After moving back home, she applied and was selected for @charlotteiscreative’s Charlotte Space Program!

🪵We partner with Charlotte is Creative to regularly provide a free four-month mini-residency inside McColl Center with a 90ft studio and full access to our production labs.

Tranashea has been spending a lot of her time in the Woodshop, building out her next installation. We are so excited to see it! by @necessaryforms

35 and ✨ THRIVING ✨

My close friend of 20+ years booked me a makeup artist and photoshoot for my 35th birthday. It was an experience! A family member said it looks like promo for a Real Housewives star lol

“I may make a sculpture, but I AM the masterpiece” 🤣 🤣

Wow! Time flies! Just a year ago, a significant chapter closed with the opening of my degree show. My installation ‘Abstracted Interiors’ was the embodiment of two years dedicated to profound mental, emotional, and creative labor. It feels like a blink! I have been enjoying the afterlife of art school and slowly finding my feet. What a journey!

To the second-year @mafineartcsm students showing this year, I wish you an incredible experience. Embrace it fully!
Some highlights etched in my memory:
 * The unwavering support of my nearest and dearest, @ogagauzoh and @wander_child, who were the ultimate assistants!
 * The joy of sharing my work with my babies and all the little ones that came.
 * The honor of receiving the @tensionfineart Award.
*The family, friends, course mates, technicians, and tutors who came and engaged thoughtfully with the work.

Sometimes I sit back and think: ‘I did that! Didn’t I?’ 😂 💪🏾
It feels like magic to have something in your mind realised in the physical. Looking forward to continued magic making 💫 taken in Central Saint Martins, Kings Cross by @necessaryforms

The first time I came to London was way way back in 2012 to take summer courses at Central Saint Martins. Young me just kneeewww I was going to be a fashion designer. That summer, I took courses in fashion and fine art, enjoying the city of London and my first time leaving the US.

Unexpectedly, I fell more in love with contemporary art making and less so with fashion industry. I went back to the states thinking “Yes! That’s it, I’ll be an artist.” Ten years and 2 kids later I started the MA Fine Art course at CSM.

Now, I’ve graduated! Talk about full circle moments. The past 2 years have been challenging but so so necessary; I wouldn’t have it any other way ✨ by @necessaryforms

Tavares Strachan // There Is Light Somewhere
@hayward.gallery

A must see exhibition currently on until 1st September 2024!

It was a great pleasure to have been invited by @necessaryforms to join and experience the exhibition especially as it relates so closely to both of our practices! We were inspired by the installation and thoughtful compositions that executed the work of @tavaresstrachan in a majestic yet poignant way.

I look forward to more gallery visits and opportunities to continue the journey, constantly being inspired by the work of other artists and creatives!

“Since sexism delegates to females the task of creating and sustaining a home environment, it has been primarily the responsibility of black women to construct domestic households as spaces of care and nurturance in the face of the brutal harsh reality of racist oppression, of sexist domination … Despite the brutal reality of racial apartheid, of domination, one’s homeplace was the one site where one could freely confront the issue of hu-manization, where one could resist.”
