Today, we celebrate Laurie Spiegel, a trailblazer in electronic music whose innovative work has transcended earthly boundaries!

In 1977, her composition “Harmonices Mundi” became part of the Voyager Golden Record—a message in a bottle launched into space aboard the Voyager spacecraft. Her music now travels through space and time, representing humanity’s artistic spirit.

Spiegel is also renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to computer music, beginning with her work at Bell Labs where she delved into digital synthesis. Her “Music Mouse” software revolutionized algorithmic composition, making it accessible to anyone with a personal computer.

Her seminal album “The Expanding Universe” is a masterful exploration of electronic soundscapes. Released in 1980, it showcases her pioneering use of computer-generated music to create vast, immersive auditory worlds. It’s so so good.

Laurie Spiegel’s legacy continues to inspire, reminding us of the limitless possibilities within sound and technology.

An incredible evening at Plantasia featuring the incomparable Suzanne Ciani, who I got to meet and speak with after her performance (on the 9th anniversary of Don Buchla’s passing; he invented the synthesizer she plays that bears his name). She was delightful.

Today, we honor the legendary Alice Coltrane, a trailblazing jazz harpist, composer, and spiritual leader whose music transcended boundaries and touched souls.

Known for her innovative use of the harp in jazz, Alice created a unique sound that blended spiritual jazz, Eastern influences, and classical music. Her work on albums like “Journey in Satchidananda” and “Ptah, the El Daoud” remains groundbreaking.

Beyond music, Alice embraced a spiritual path that deeply influenced her compositions. Her devotion to spirituality is reflected in her later works, which often incorporated meditative and transcendental elements.

As a pioneering woman in jazz, Alice Coltrane’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the music world. Her visionary artistry continues to inspire us to explore deeper dimensions of sound and spirit.
