What does a fair career in the creative sector actually look like — from the inside?
Ned Kaar, housing officer and alumni coordinator at @designacademyeindhoven, has a front-row seat. He watches young designers find their footing, lose it, and find it again. He knows what support makes the difference.
This Thursday & Friday, Ned joins Barbara Revelli (@elia_arts) and Joost Heinsius @creativeflip.eu is on the opening panel at Satellite BEYOND in Amsterdam — a two-day design sprint on fair practice in Europe’s cultural sector. We’re proud to bring his perspective to the table as co-organiser. 🌍

Meet the new residents for Redesigning Design Weeks – CIVICITY 2026!

Nieuwe Instituut, Milanese cultural organisation cheFare, and the Collective Works curators have announced the new resident designers for the 2026 edition of Redesigning Design Weeks – CIVICITY.

Demo– practice and Ned Kaar were selected through an open call in autumn 2025, and will complete a two-month residency in Milan this year. During this time, they will develop site-specific design responses that critically examine the environmental, social and spatial challenges surrounding large-scale urban design events. Their research and proposals will be grounded in collaborations with two new local community organisations: Barrio’s in Milan’s Barona neighbourhood and Fondazione Abitiamo in the Niguarda district.

Demo– practice and Ned Kaar will present their initial findings at Milan Design Week in 2026, alongside the final outcomes of the 2025 CIVICITY residents, Pete Fung and Studio-Method. Building on this previous research, Demo– practice and Ned Kaar will present the final, expanded outcomes of their residencies at Milan Design Week 2027.

ESSENTIAL INTEREST TO DUTCH CULTURE
An open collective exhibition for and by non-EU creatives
Kruisstraat Design District, Kruisstraat 185, Eindhoven
18-26 Oct 2025

A temporary design exhibition created by and for people who have experience of the visa application process as non-EU residents in the Netherlands and exploring the phrase “essential interest to Dutch culture” — a requirement that many non-EU creatives must meet to remain in the country.

This exhibition reclaims that phrase as a sequence of questions: What makes an individual’s work essential and is culture something that can be measured through individual contributions?

The result is a public presentation of design, memory, and identity rooted in Kruisstraat — a vibrant, multicultural street shaped by the very communities that this exhibition seeks to center.

Leveraging the platform of Dutch Design Week along with national funding for design and local collaborations with a real estate developer, municipal office and street-wide business owners association, Kruisstraat Design District (KDD) is a cultural institution founded upon the experiences of diaspora. All participants contribute to the voice of KDD, guiding and executing curatorial and production roles, creating and holding space for each other. KDD recognises the unique contribution of this community to Dutch design and wider culture, and subsequently acts as an open platform for designers in the process of proving their essential interest to Dutch culture by way of exhibitions sent as proof to immigration authorities. All participants receive a letter of participation and share curatorial and production credits.

KDD is initiated by Irish designer Ned Kaar with support from @stimuleringsfonds and an official selected participant of @dutchdesignweek. KDD would not be possible without the support of @gemeente_eindhoven, @kragtgroep and the Kruisstraat BIZ.

Created, curated and produced by 33 artists and designers (tagged next to their work).

The game is on! Van 18 t/m 26 oktober verandert Emma District tijdens Dutch Design Week in een speelveld vol creativiteit, innovatie en interactie met DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS. 🚫

📍 Waar: Emma District, Eindhoven
🎯 Wat: Tentoonstellingen, installaties, workshops en live events.

The website is up and running!

Happy (and nervous) to launch this into the Dutch Design Week later this month, with more information to follow soon.

A temporary exhibition created by and for people who have experience of the visa application process as non-EU residents in the Netherlands and exploring the phrase “essential interest to Dutch culture” — a requirement that many non-EU creatives must meet to remain in the country.

Through a breadth of contributions, and a collective curatorial process, it aims to reclaim that phrase as a question: What makes an individual’s work essential, and is culture something to be measured through individual contributions?

The result will be a public presentation of design, memory, and identity rooted in Kruisstraat — a vibrant, multicultural street shaped by the very communities that this exhibition seeks to center.

The open call for this open exhibition remains open up until build up in a couple weeks.

To get involved or find out more you can follow the link in bio, or send me a message.

Please share with a friend!

This open call is part of a wider project graciously supported by @stimuleringsfonds and could not happen without the support of the @gemeente_eindhoven and their staff on Kruisstraat and the ondernemers of the street.
