My Chinese Moon Goddess embroidery. The traditional Chinese flute she is playing is the dizi (笛子), which is made of bamboo. The knot at the end of the instrument is not merely decorative; knots have rich symbolic meanings in Chinese culture. The Chinese word jié (结), meaning “knot,” is also associated with meanings such as binding and joining; therefore, knots symbolize reunion, friendship, love, marriage, and bonds between people. Traditional Chinese knots are also used as expressions of happiness, prosperity, good fortune, and good wishes. The fact that almost all basic Chinese knots have symmetrical forms also visually reflects the ideas of harmony and balance.

From my Music–Mythology–Women–Embroidery series. Laka, the goddess of the Hawaiian hula dance, is depicted here holding an ʻuliʻuli, a traditional percussion instrument made from a gourd or coconut shell and decorated with colorful feathers. It is shaken rhythmically in the hands of hula dancers. Gourds of various sizes also accompany this dance, which is deeply connected to Hawaiian mythology. In this piece, I employed double running stitch (Holbein stitch), herringbone stitch, French knots, Chinese stitch, bullion knots, and ribbon embroidery. To evoke the appearance of reeds in the skirt, I incorporated reed cord, a material also commonly used in bag making.
