I’ve spent the past week wondering how I could possibly sum up 16 years of loving you in 20 photos. There aren’t enough minutes in a lifetime to explain what you meant to me.

I miss the weight of your body on my chest. Your stinky breath in my face. The soft fur you left behind on every piece of clothing I own (and somehow in my mouth). The way you’d lay your head in my hand when you didn’t feel like holding it up yourself and how you’d nuzzle every inch of your existence into my neck. I miss waking up to you digging under the covers, absolutely certain that whatever space I had left was actually yours, because it was.

For 16 years, you were woven into the smallest (and biggest) parts of my life.

And you didn’t just belong to me. You had a way of making yourself belong everywhere.

You curled up next to strangers at coffee shops. You treated every friend’s lap like it belonged to you. You hopped into just about any car without a single care about where it might be going. There are places where you were as much of a regular as I was, because seeing me without you was the anomaly.

You weren’t just part of my life. You were my favorite part of it.

My favorite travel companion and the best passenger prince a girl could ask for. You went to more festivals and shows than some people I know. You became the mascot of every festival house I rented and, naturally, sat on every person who walked through the door. You came with me so often that I think a part of me believed there would never be somewhere I had to go without you.

Mostly, though, I never want to forget what it felt like to love you in the ordinary moments. The ones I didn’t know I’d someday give anything to have back.

All the tiny things that, put together, became 16 years of my life. Every version of me, every home, every routine, every trip, every ordinary day. I grew up with you beside me.

A lifetime loving you was never going to be enough.

I had the privilege of loving you for your entire life, and now I’ll spend the rest of mine missing you.
