Saarka De Rajhe & Ranis!

So good to be out today repping @easthertspsg & @herts_not_hate - with my dear comrade, Kevin Wilkins and other locals including local councillor Jill Weston, Sarah from @grandmas_4_gaza & folks from Your Party!

Enjoying a bit of spring sunshine & leafletting for the forthcoming Together March, to stand in solidarity against the rise of the far right!

Why is this SO important?

I was 11 when Gurdip Singh Chaggar was brutally murdered by a gang of skin heads in Southall in June 1976. What made the killing all the more devestating was that it happened in a majority Asian community (known as little India) and on a major thoroughfare, outside a cinema. For those of us growing up in this community our anger was all the more heightened by the nonchalant response of the police who literally said “it’s just an Asian”. This murder was not an isolated incident, it was part of the rise of the far right back then. The killing of Gurdip and the strength of the anger it inspired, led to the creation locally of the Southall Youth Movement. The widespread attacks by the National Front & the British National Party against POC around the country led to the formation of the Anti Nazi League.

The rise of the far right scum back then was defeated by grass roots organizing and demonstration of strength! It’s the only way we’re going to stop them now. To learn more about this history get yourself a copy of “A People’s History of the Anti Nazi League” by Geoff Brown, one of its organizers. I was lucky enough to be at a recent book launch event and having just finished reading the book, recommend it.

There is so much we can learn from past movements and so much we need to understand is radically different from back then. Get involved, don’t let the far right gain a foothold.

Join us on March 28th
Let’s make it HUGE!

‼️New Podcast Alert ‼️

Rana Sharif and David Lloyd turn first to India, where the Cockroach Janta Party that formed this summer continues to challenge the extreme right, ethno-nationalist Barati Janata Party (or BJP) of Prime Minister Modi. They talk to anti-racist and food justice activist Neelam Sharma for some deeper analysis of the Cockroach movement and its relation to the longer and broader history of Indian insurgent social movements. They then turn to the question of “psychic militancy” with psychoanalyst Lara Sheehi, a returning guest here on Radio Intifada, whose new book, From the Clinic to the Streets: Psychoanalysis for Revolutionary Futures, just out from Pluto Books, argues for a new, liberatory psychoanalysis.

Guests:

And of course to June Jordan for her words!
“Poem About My Rights” was written in 1978 and sadly remains far too relevant today! We simply replace South Africa and the countries around it, in the poem, with Israel & the countries around it.

@soumyanair offering homage to recently deceased Asha Bhosle
Wow! She really did her justice, what a beautiful voice and so much fun to hear the classics. She shared with us that she’s never before been able to get the hiccup right (2nd clip), she nailed it this time!

But what was also really special was the new arrangements of the music with lovely jazzy breaks!

@vanshikaaroramusic then we had a set offering popular Punjabi songs, including one of my very favorites from Rahat, as well as original compositions.

ALL the musicians were amazing!

Follow @sounddhaba & get to an event there soon. In addition to this monthly desi evening put on in@partnership with @neel.k.agrawal - there are all sorts of amazing music events in this truly wonderful space created by the inimitable Simmi Ghandhi!

Dr. Delio Vasquez, speaking about his book:
Huey P. Newton - I Am We during the
60th Anniversary of The Black Panther Party Celebration at the Paul Robeson Community Wellness Center

This book is a much needed and thorough assertion of the importance of Huey’s ideas, of the nefarious efforts of the state to destroy him & how this is linked to ongoing & current subversive warfare by the state.

Here we share just a few video clips & photos, but stay tuned, we will be sharing the full video as we think it is so important to hear the full book event.

And please support this important work by buying and reading it! Available now @vmpcsu - just pick it up with your groceries. by @neelooks
