I think this birthday feels a little different.

Some years pass, and some years leave something behind.

This one took a lot from us. It took months of our lives, took away some of the bravest people, took away pieces of our youth, and left behind a kind of cruelty that no one could ever truly understand unless they had lived through it.

And somewhere along the way, I think I changed too. Maybe more than I even realize. There are parts of me that I don’t recognize anymore, not because I chose to leave them behind, but because so many things happened in such a short time that the person I was somehow got lost in between them.

There were days when we weren’t really living, just trying to find little pieces of life wherever we could. In a trip, a workout, a dinner with friends, a laugh, a familiar voice on the phone, or even in the smallest moments that made everything feel normal for a while.

And somehow, even those little things came with their own kind of sadness. Some people left our lives, some days were spent waiting and worrying, and some conversations with the people we love carried more silence than words.

But there were beautiful moments too. Somehow, they found their way through all the darkness. Little pockets of happiness that reminded us that life was still happening, even when it didn’t quite feel like it.

Maybe that’s what this year taught me, that sometimes surviving is our only choice. Sometimes it looks like getting dressed and going out. Showing up to the workout. Laughing when you genuinely can. Calling someone you love. Finding a reason to look forward to tomorrow.

I don’t know exactly who I am stepping into this new year as. I just know I’m not the same person who started the last one.

And maybe I don’t have to find her again. Maybe I just have to get to know the person who came out of all of this.

So this year, I’m not wishing for more. Just for lighter days. For more moments that feel like living, rather than finding ways to get through.

And maybe, after everything, that is enough. by @neg.visuals
