“The Motions,” (2021).

This is my best friend, Drea. She’s starting a new business called @pinetartco, tasked with educating and encouraging creative entrepreneurs of color on wellness and healing.

The concept behind this shoot was inspired by the cover art of Big L’s solo debut album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, taken by Danny Clinch.

Drea has expressed the ups & downs she’s faced in the pursuit of creativity and entrepreneurship as craziness. I wanted to capture that craziness and reinterpret it as creative energy, in which Drea is often at the center of. With Drea standing ever so still, she maintains a sense of awareness above all that’s happening around her; she’s in control and at the center.

The blurred individuals in the fore/background of these photos are all part of Drea’s family of artists. There’s a recording artist, a fashion designer, a craftsman, an educator, a painter, a photographer (me), and an interior designer– all based in Newark.

This past summer my husband, Reis, and I traveled to Guyana for his uncle’s wedding. It was my first time visiting the continent of South America and his first time returning in over 27 years. It was like that for much of the family— it was the perfect timing for a homecoming.

We visited the family’s ancestral home. Built by Reis’ great-grandfather, it was where his grandmother would eventually grow up and give birth to three of five children before moving to America, and it is where his great-aunt now lives with her family. How beautiful was it for the family to visit with a hand-drawn “Welcome Home” sign taped to the door, no doubt, thanks to the yute dem of the house.

These photos were taken in a single afternoon as we explored the neighborhood, shot on 35mm KP400 film...I have a few more rolls from Guyana to develop, but I wanted to share these now. taken in Georgetown, Guyana by @negr0wth
