I pray history will expand the English language I love like a scientist of it for Black women the way it updates its pronouns, diagnoses and more as recognition, protection and validation for special cases or conditions all must consider, understand and respect- or else.

Sandra's passing was no more from "suicide" than escaped slave Margaret Garner's baby's death was "infanticide."

The same terms, definitions or frames usually do not apply to Black women's responses and self-expressions because our treatments and regards are so far from what anybody else has to know or encounter in daily life, let alone expect and adapt to- including Black men, who have us to backbone them for the same even if they do the same as Others.

You may "ally" or sympathize but you will never know, feel, sense, relate to or share what just waking up or walking out the door means for a Black woman.

No Others on the planet more juggle and dodge threat of punishment for natural instinct to not be silent while possibly killed everywhere it goes, from home to work to sleep.

The impossible 2/5 person I am not (but whom unenlightened and unreformed Others can only love or see a Black woman as) must be giving them service or enjoyment, or else their feelings of discomfort override mine of normalcy.

Then unnecessary instincts to kill what makes them uncomfortable starts- and this is all day, all week, all year, all...

I'm a Black woman and I want new words. I had to make my own word as lexical brevity for Black women's survival of suppression, repression, regression, transgression...I could go on. But above all, always: 'negression' enfolds our spirited expressions above all negative the word intends to encompass.

My sisters in spirit Sandra and Margaret stayed speaking and beautiful up to and past moments of their lives the world only ever got to know them for.

They're still speaking today, against intent of Others to silence or kill them, because they expressed: "I am not enjoying this."

I love @davidkibbenyc POWER OF STYLE and you will too. 💫💖Last December, RuPaul made it his "Love Yourself" Book Club pick. I'd be surprised at better choices for that; loving yourself and finding the star within you is the whole intention behind writing or reading this book.

One of my 25 #BooksofSummer from @beautynewsnyc_official, I'm inspired to move to the next phase of my life and looks with great ideas and tips in here.

I inherited good style sense from grandmothers and aunts- regulars of Carson Pirie Scott in our little Normal Rockwell downtown, Marshall Field's on State Street in Chicago's downtown they got up to as often as life let them, and the old faithful Salvation Army anywhere they spotted one (yes I'm still a fan).

The late great Andre Leon Talley outlined the exact kind of community of Black women and church people who made me curious about fashion and attentive to my own communicating in clothes in his A.L.T. memoir and THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRE doc.

So I know how to get the good stuff that lasts decades like these women passed down to me, with also the short shelf life wears like the unabashed $15 Kmart sundress that I graduated at near top of a University of Chicago class in.

So this is a fun book if you're like me and have had to figure it out for yourself, or even if you benefit from a stylist to see you like you can't see yourself so may need a fresh take on dressing you. It's a loving but somewhat delicate gift; be sure to clarify you aren't necessarily telling a woman her style sucks if you give it 😆💖💫🪭💄🧣💅🏿💃🏿👠👛

For two years I've been quietly lucky and proud to be a Staff Writer for @beautynewsnyc_official, marking its 25th anniversary as the world's very first digital magazine exclusively for beauty, fashion and style. It was my dream in college to live in New York City and work for a women's fashion magazine while (I thought) getting my little novels rejected left and right.

But God had other plans to get the fiction career started far sooner than I'd dreamed of. It remains a blessing but a lot sidetracked as a result. Then, in 2024, BN NYC Publisher/Editor @bkimtaylor helped me reach back to that girlhood dream in my grown woman 40's to write beyond my known identity in books, proving "It's Never Too Late"!

And that just happens to be the title of 1 of 25 books I recommend there for summer reading. I write there about food, art, women-owned brands, film and even perfume. However, books will always be my first love. Fiction is actually the least of the list but my personal favorite of course, so buy or download one or more of my recs by these amazing new or name novelists and short story writers!

Wish I could say I was confused about why we aren't seeing Colman, Audra, Chris, Glynn, Jeffrey, I could go on... as an unprecedented historical drama ensemble of the season in George C. Wolfe's RUSTIN like we see for Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, which I loved enough to see twice, or Nolan's Oppenheimer, an awful waste of time and energy even once. But we know why.
