Mindfulness, one little space at a time. 🌿🎨

For the past few weeks, I’ve been finding quiet moments in mandala colouring. I don’t rush to finish one in a day. I simply return to it whenever I can, slowly adding colours to the blank spaces.

Perhaps that’s what I enjoy most—the reminder that not everything needs to be completed at once. Sometimes, there is joy simply in filling the spaces, colour by colour, moment by moment.

“How far can we travel before the past stops travelling with us?”

In The Lowland, Jhumpa Lahiri takes us from the marshy landscape of Tollygunge, Calcutta, to Rhode Island, following two brothers whose very different choices alter the lives of everyone around them.

It is a story of brotherhood, revolution, love, parenthood and abandonment—but above all, of memory. The lowland itself becomes a metaphor: submerged, resurfacing, never quite disappearing, much like the past we carry within us.

Quiet, layered and deeply human, this is a novel about the long afterlife of our choices and the complicated meaning of home.

“Sometimes the biggest lessons come on the softest paws.”

From the busy streets of New Delhi to the quiet mountains of Dharamshala, The Dalai Lama’s Cat by David Michie offers wisdom through the wonderfully observant eyes of HHC — His Holiness’s Cat.

Warm, witty and quietly profound, it explores mindfulness, compassion, kindness and letting go of the ego without ever feeling like a lesson in philosophy.

A gentle reminder that peace may not come from changing the world around us, but from changing the way we see it.

“In a time of darkness, she chose to be light.”

The Tiger Claw by Shauna Singh Baldwin brings us close to the extraordinary world of Noor Inayat Khan—a musician, writer, Sufi’s daughter and wartime wireless operator whose gentleness existed alongside remarkable courage.

Moving between music, love, identity, war and resistance, the novel reminds us that bravery does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes, it is simply the quiet decision to stand by what you believe in, whatever the cost.

A compelling read about a woman whose life was brief, but whose story continues to resonate. 🌿📖

Some lives are small in length, but immense in meaning.

There is something special about a morning Baithak—sitting together under the trees, listening as a story slowly unfolds, allowing the past to find its way into the present. 🌿

On 20 September 2026, the beautiful setting of Sunder Nursery became the space for such a gathering—a morning Baithak / Qissa Go with Leher Zaidi, organised by Tales of the City, in remembrance of Noor Inayat Khan — Pirzadi Shahida.

Through an intimate morning of qissas, Noor emerged not merely as a wartime heroine, but as the woman she was—a musician who played the veena, a writer, a Sufi soul, and ultimately, a woman of extraordinary courage.

From music to resistance, hers is a story that stays with you long after the telling has ended.

A morning Baithak that felt less like a lesson in history and more like sitting in the company of a remarkable life.

“That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”

And The Namesake makes you travel—between Calcutta and America, Gogol and Nikhil, roots and reinvention.

A name inherited almost by accident becomes a story of a father’s survival, a son’s identity, and the invisible ties that bind us to family and home.

Jhumpa Lahiri beautifully reminds us that geography is emotional too—we carry places, people and memories within us wherever we go.

Gogol? Nikhil? Both. And more.
Some names—and some books—take a lifetime to understand. 📖✨

Love simply is.” — Paulo Coelho

The Zahir is less a love story and more a journey into marriage, longing, freedom and self-discovery. Like two railway tracks, two people may travel through life together without losing their individuality.

A beautiful reminder not to become so comfortable in love that we begin to take it for granted. Sometimes, the search for another person leads us back to ourselves. 🌻📖

It is a love from which we never recover.” ❤️
— Marjan Kamali, The Stationery Shop of Tehran

Tehran, 1953. Seventeen-year-old Roya finds her world opening inside Mr Fakhri’s stationery shop, where books, Rumi’s poetry—and Bahman, an idealistic young activist—change the course of her life.

They fall in love as Tehran itself stands on the edge of political upheaval. Then, just before they are meant to begin their life together, everything changes.

More than sixty years later, Roya finally gets the chance to ask the question she has carried across continents and through an entire lifetime: Why did Bahman disappear?

A tender story of first love, memory, separation and the truths we sometimes wait a lifetime to hear. 🌷

You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.” ❤️
— Me Before You, Jojo Moyes

Me Before You is the story of Louisa Clark and Will Traynor—two people who enter each other’s lives unexpectedly and change them in ways neither could have imagined.

It is tender, funny and heartbreaking, but beneath the love story lies something deeper: a reminder to live beyond fear, take chances, make your own choices and not simply exist when you can truly live.

Maybe that’s why the book still speaks so strongly to younger readers. In a world constantly telling us who to become and how quickly to get there, it whispers something simpler:

Your life doesn’t have to look perfect. It just has to feel like yours. ✨

"I was born from stories that were whispered, silenced, forgotten — and yet never truly lost.”

The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak brings together two families—one Turkish, one Armenian—whose stories are separated by history yet deeply intertwined.

Set between Istanbul and San Francisco, it is a compelling exploration of memory, identity, family, belonging and the stories we inherit. At its heart lies a simple reminder: understanding the past requires the courage to listen to more than one voice.

Some books tell stories. Others ask us to remember. 🌷

That casual glance was the beginning of a cataclysm of love that still had not ended half a century later.”
— Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera

Some love stories are measured in moments.
This one is measured in decades.

First published in 1985, Love in the Time of Cholera follows Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza through youth, separation, marriage, loss and more than fifty years of waiting. Yet Márquez gives us something far more complex than a conventional romance—he asks what becomes of love when youth fades, life intervenes and time changes almost everything.

Perhaps that is why the novel lingers.

Because somewhere between longing and memory, between what was and what might still be, Márquez reminds us that the heart keeps its own calendar. ❤️

Some stories end. Some people simply learn how to wait.

📖 The Alchemist — Paulo Coelho

First published in 1988 in Portuguese, The Alchemist by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho is a timeless story about Santiago, a young shepherd who sets out in search of a treasure near the Egyptian pyramids.

But his journey soon becomes about something far greater—listening to your heart, recognising the signs along the way, overcoming fear and having the courage to follow your dreams.

Simple yet deeply philosophical, the book reminds us that sometimes the journey towards what we seek also helps us discover who we are.

✨ “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
