We were delighted to host journalist and author Neha Dixit for a discussion on her critically acclaimed and important book, ‘The Many Lives of Syeda X’.

Drawing from almost 900 interviews conducted over nine years, the book follows Syeda who has had to navigate several instances of precarity and informal labour in contemporary India. It is through Syeda’s story that Dixit traces the gendered and communal dimensions of informal labour, examining how state policies, institutions and communal violence, shape the everyday realities of working-class women. The book also foregrounds how major political upheavals—from the violence on her husband who eventually cannot work surrounding the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 to the police picking up of Syeda’s son on suspicion of being a Mujahideen—become inseparable from the intimate, everyday struggles of survival.

The discussion brought into focus the intersections of gender, class, religion, labour, and state power, asking us to reckon with the lives and labour that remain largely invisible in dominant narratives of the Indian economy and society.

किताब उत्सव—बरेली में मिलिए पत्रकार नेहा दीक्षित से

नेहा दीक्षित स्वतंत्र पत्रकार और लेखक हैं। उन्होंने 17 सालों तक राजनीति, जेंडर और सामाजिक न्याय से जुड़े विषयों पर लेखन व पत्रकारिता की है। वह अल जज़ीरा, द वाशिंगटन पोस्ट, कारवां, द वायर और अन्य जाने-माने प्रकाशनों के लिए रिपोर्टिंग करती हैं। वे मानवाधिकारों के उल्लंघन को लेकर काम करती रही हैं, और पुलिस द्वारा ग़ैर-न्यायिक हत्याओं, घृणाजन्य अपराधों, मानव तस्करी, बड़ी फ़ार्मा कम्पनियों द्वारा हाशिए पर पड़े लोगों पर क्लिनिकल ट्रायल और दक्षिण एशिया में साम्प्रदायिक हिंसा आदि के मामलों को उजागर करती रही हैं। उन्होंने राजनीतिक प्रोफ़ाइल भी लिखे हैं और बहुसंख्यकवादी सरकारों के तहत श्रम‌िकों से जुड़े अन्त‌‌िर्वरोधों पर काम किया है।
उन्हें एक दर्जन से ज़्यादा अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय और राष्ट्रीय पत्रकारिता पुरस्कार मिले हैं, जिनमें कमेटी टु प्रोटेक्ट जर्नलिस्ट्स द्वारा ‘अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय प्रेस स्वतंत्रता पुरस्कार’, उत्कृष्ट महिला पत्रकार के लिए ‘चमेली देवी जैन पुरस्कार’, यूरोपीय आयोग से पत्रकारिता के लिए ‘लोरेंजो नताली पुरस्कार’ और अन्य कई पुरस्कार शामिल हैं।
‘द मेनी लाइव्ज़ ऑफ़ सईदा एक्स’ उनकी पहली किताब है। इस किताब को ‘द हिंदू’ और ‘डेक्कन हेराल्ड’ ने 2024 की महत्त्वपूर्ण किताब के रूप में चुना था। इसी किताब के लिए उन्हें ‘रामनाथ गोयनका साहित्य सम्मान’ और ‘कलिंगा सर्वश्रेष्ठ डेब्यू पुरस्कार’ से भी सम्मानित किया जा चुका है। हिन्दी में यह किताब प्रभात सिंह के अनुवादमें ‘कोई एक सईदा’ नाम से प्रकाशित है।

Like a lot of you, I spent last week reading Ritika Chopra’s reporting in The Indian Express on the Election Commission. Since then she has come on camera, answered every question and doubt, and stood firmly by her report. She has said more than once that she isn’t someone who likes being in front of the camera, and she did it anyway. Her grit is admirable.

It made me think of other women journalists whose work I’ve followed over the years. Greeshma Kuthar in Manipur. Tanushree Pandey in Hathras. Poonam Agarwal on the gap between votes polled and votes counted. Neha Dixit on the 31 girls taken from Assam. Jatinder Kaur Tur on Poonch. Sukanya Shantha on caste in our prison manuals. Manisha Mondal on caste, including her own experience of it.

Several of them have been trolled or threatened because of this work. They kept reporting, and we know more because they did.

I’ve written a little about each of them in the slides and followed below in the comments …. Which of these stories do you remember reading when it first came out?

Ritika chopra has covered the Election commission for over 10 years …the story as she says didn’t just land in her hand like in Hindi films ..she found the story by being present on ground

While Manipur burned and the Government of India chose to look the other way …Greeshma did the thing journalists do ..she went to Manipur and got us stories from there ..

Remember Hathras 2020 ? A young girl was cremated in the middle of the night ..Tanushree was the reporter who stayed and kept asking questions and got us that story

Poonam found the discrepancies in the votes polled and counted ..she kept the fight up ..I had the privilege of having her on my podcast ..a must watch to see how a journalist fights the system ..mostly alone

Neha followed the young girls trafficked from Assam to Punjab and Gujarat ..if you haven’t followed Operation Babylift ..pls do

Jatinder followed the allegations of civilian deaths and torture in Poonch -Jammu and Kashmir ..a story nobody wanted to touch …

She showed how caste was written into prison manuals ..and made an impact when the Supreme C taken in India by @nehadixit123
