In her memoir Foreign Return, Neha Kale moves from Mumbai to Perth, London, Melbourne and Sydney, tracing how migration, memory and art shape our sense of identity and belonging.

Along the way, works by artists including Dayanita Singh, Artemisia Gentileschi and Amrita Sher-Gil become a way of revisiting places, people and different versions of home.

Joanna Mendelssohn, in her review of the book, looks at how Kale turns encounters with art into a deeply personal exploration of where, and what, home can be.

Mixing personal narrative with art and cultural criticism, Foreign Return explores the work of artists Dayanita Singh, Ana Mendieta, Tracey Emin, Brett Whiteley and Danie Mellor among others to investigate the myth of the suburbs, the shadows of colonial inheritance, and the changing ways we need to conceive of homes and their ownership.
