grief and gratitude in a stormy swirl. it chokes. everytime my phone rings i expect to hear him roaring at me, demanding to know my arrival time and the menu for our weekly lunches. shout out to me for always taking tons of photos and recording his stories, usually against his will. i have no regrets, and i’m relieved he’s outta here, but ya allah, i am devastated. by @nehedari

In memory of my grandfather Meir. by @nehedari

my grandfather, meir abehsera (later hebraicized to avissara) was born somewhere between 1930-1933 in mogador, morocco (now essaouira) his forebearers were a mix of ‘toshavim’ or ‘bildiyin’ (بلديين ) (natives or residents, Judeo-Berbers) and ´megurashim’, (the expelled); terms for Moroccan Jews to distinguish between those who migrated to the Maghreb after being expelled from the Holy Land by the Babylonians in 587 BCE, and the Jewish communities that were expelled from the Iberian peninsula, especially after the 1492 Alhambra decree, part of the Spanish Inquisition. Saba grew up hungry and poor in the shadow cast far of WWII, when the French Vichy (Nazi) government and the Spanish Franco (fascist) governments divided Morocco in brutal colonization. When Meir was 14, his father Mordechai (Mardoche), a barber, died after a years long battle with typhoid fever. Saba said that when she lost her husband, his mother, my great grandmother Mimi (Simcha) had "bad thoughts”. my sister Irin wrote about this beautifully in Tablet Magazine. Saba said, “She spoke terrible nonsense. What nonsense? She saw in everything the spirit of my father. ‘You see that camel? It looks like a camel, but it is really your father.’
Jewish community elders told him to take her to the grave of the sainted Rabbi David Ben-Baroukh, aka Baba Dudu, who died in 1785 and was famed for healing incurable ailments. my grandfather carried his weak mother on his back on an hours long pilgrimage to the desert grave where they camped out overnight in a shack. after what in his telling sounds like an exorcism, mama mimi was magically healed of the disease of grief. 14 year old Meir became his family’s provider, supporting his distraught mother and five sisters and younger brothers, including a one year old. he quit school and learned to drive trucks, still so small he had to drive standing up to reach the pedals. he delivered sardines, he drove for the Red Cross, he smuggled goods in the dead of night for an Italian boss across the French-Spanish border. His sister’s boyfriend sent him a postcard from the newly established Israel that set ablaze in him a fire to make aaliyah (continued in comments) by @nehedari
