‘Beyond Fact’ is the fourth track on my debut album ‘A Machine for Dreaming In’, available for purchase and streaming now, see link in bio. The mood and theme for this track was about our innate need for a sense of mystery and enchantment, going ‘beyond fact’. There’s an interesting paradox for me in this idea - that this urge can be very life-affirming on one hand and very troubling on the other. The music tries to capture the former, a sense of deep contemplation and transcendence, while the lyrics try to capture the latter - that this urge has been hijacked by the algorithms which harness our attention. The first line, somewhat buried under processing is ‘Lines of code, mysteries grow’. I’d been reading about how some algorithms have gotten so complex that they are beyond human comprehension. by @neil.blank

My debut album ‘A Machine for Dreaming In’ is out now. The last track ‘Mountain Time’ is inspired by the emptiness of Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico where my wife and I moved during the pandemic - and musically by Low’s ‘Double Negative’, imho the masterpiece of the last decade. Hopefully it acts as an invitation to seriously slow down for a bit, to Taos time if not geological time. ‘A Machine for Dreaming In’ is available wherever you listen to music but please consider prioritizing Bandcamp who enable buying directly from an artist, rather than renting from tech companies who keep all the money! My debut album ‘A Machine for Dreaming In’ is out now. It brings together my musical obsessions; the bliss of ambience in ‘Lucid Fugue’ and ‘Mountain Time’, wonky songs in ‘Round and Round’ and ‘Where Hope Lies’ and in-between electronics in ‘Imago’ and ‘Singing Wires’. Lyrically the album plays with modernism, silicon valley and my experience of moving to America in my thirties during some very strange moments in its history. In my head the ‘machine’ of the title is the iPhone and America itself but maybe I’ve over thought it a bit! The cover image is a malfunctioning sign in Selma, Montgomery. Anyway it comes from the heart, I really hope you are able to spend some time with it, I think it will be worth it! If you can please consider making a donation on Bandcamp. It’s also streaming everywhere. See link in bio. by @neil.blank

My debut album A Machine for Dreaming In is coming, June 10. As you may know my given name is Neil Nisbet but I chose the name Blank for my music work for a few reasons. Firstly it’s my mum’s given name, on her birth certificate; German for ‘naked’, ‘broke’ and ‘pure’ all of which seemed about right for a music project. Secondly the association to post punk, the ‘Blank Generation’ one of the undercurrents of tracks like ‘Where Hope Lies’ and ‘Round and Round’ and ‘Singing Wires’. And last but not least the attempt to achieve quietude and open mindedness in this oversaturated moment. (And of course it also sounds less dorky than Nisbet) by @neil.blank

Big News: My debut album, ‘A Machine for Dreaming In’ will be available for purchase and streaming in a few weeks.

Starting the countdown with track 8, ‘Singing Wires’. This one was influenced by PJ Harvey’s ‘The Lonely Wolf’ and Tortoise’s ‘Charteroak Foundation’ both of which have fascinating arpeggio triplets. Like many of the tracks on the album the title and mood came out of my exposure to silicon valley while reading too much Philip K Dick.
