21 years married today. ❤️

For our 14th anniversary, I surprised Nel had our wedding album redone. I still love pulling it out and looking through it.

There are so many things I love about these photographs. Seeing all those beautiful faces together, remembering the moment Nel came down the aisle, and finding all those little moments that might otherwise have faded with time.

I think about this a lot when I’m photographing a wedding for my clients. The photographs that mean the most aren’t always the ones you expect. It’s the people, the connections, and the little things happening in between that you want to hold onto.

I’m so grateful we have these photographs to bring it all back. 🥰

Day late post to wish my sweet one a happy birthday. This video (filmed last night on her birthday) sums up the beautiful Gracie. Lover of music, musical, rhythmic, so cool, so fun, so light in energy. The miracle of Gracie, my little 2lb preemie will never seize to amaze me. You are a bright shining beam of goodness and light. Last weekend, “The Essence of Us” had its world premiere at 92NY. Seeing the film finally meet an audience was incredibly special. 🥰

This project began because @malpasodance could not travel to New York for the planned premiere of @pedroruizjr23’s new work.

So we went to them.

What came out of that experience is a film about artists, collaboration, resilience, and the ways dance can connect us even when borders make that connection difficult.

That was always the heart of the film for us.

I’m so grateful to @92ndstreety for believing in this project and finding a way forward when the original plan became impossible. To Pedro and the dancers of Malpaso for welcoming us into their process. To @ashlibickford, @cdugganphoto, our Cuban collaborators, and everyone who helped bring this film to life.

And to everyone who came to the premiere, joined our Q&A, watched during the 72-hour streaming window, shared the film, or supported us along the way: thank you.

My greatest memory of Dolly is watching her every Sunday night on the Dolly show in the 80s on my parents TV laying on my stomach waiting for the end when she sang “I will always love you.” Maybe my memory is off because I can’t find a single snippet from that show but I did find her singing it on the Porter Wagoner show in maybe 1974. Dolly your shining example of joy, grace and so much humor and love has helped me so much in my life and in so many lives. I will miss you forever. #dollyparton by @nelshelby

In 2001, I said yes to an internship at Jacob’s Pillow, not yet knowing how much that single decision would shape me or how much I would give in return.⁠
⁠
That "yes" changed my life.⁠
⁠
Jacob’s Pillow helped me build my career, introduced me to countless people, and has been a place of deep creativity, joy and sorrow, and then more joy. My kids have grown up at the Pillow, and my cabin is on the road that leads there. The love, the joy, the sense of belonging this place has given me will never, ever fade. Through Nel Shelby Productions, I have had the honor of filming thousands of performances at the Pillow and creating countless films that allow dance to live beyond the stage.⁠
⁠
And then this year, something came to me.⁠
⁠
Not in a super logical way, but in that quiet, clear way where you just know.⁠
⁠
After these incredible 25 years, I knew it was time for me to take a step back from the day-to-day of the festival and pass the torch to the next generation of our team. To really shine the light on them and let them lead in all the ways NSP supports the Pillow with photographing, filming, editing, and livestreaming.⁠
⁠
I won’t be there in the same way this summer, but I will be on the sidelines, cheering on my team and everyone at the Pillow. It was an incredibly difficult choice, and yet one that feels deeply right.⁠
⁠
After 19 festivals, Christopher's role is evolving as well. He'll mentor the photo team mostly from afar, possibly relieving the photographers mid summer so they can take a break. There's also a good chance the Pillow will involve him in special projects. The Pillow has always been his artistic pilgrimage, and while he may pop in here and there, this is a notable shift for him too.⁠

We are so grateful to Pam, Jared, and AJ for being open and supportive of this next phase of NSP at Jacob’s Pillow. Deep gratitude to Carmella Vassor Johnson, who hired me as an intern and later as videographer in 2004, and has been a true mentor. And to the legendary Norton Owen, a longtime friend and collaborator.⁠

It’s my birthday today and I turned 49 and for those of you who know me you know how much I LOVE being a Pisces. For some reason it gets me so excited. And what I also love so very much is moving my body / sweating. I kinda feel like I’m bragging but today I decided I’m 49 and I get to brag because I’ve worked my butt off to stay consistent and keep this body in shape. My test today for myself was can I still do a head stand and I did!

Ok the other things I love and I’m so grateful for…God, my family, my friends, my team, my business, my home, my sisters, my mom, my dad, my kids, my husband, my cats, my sister’s dogs, my nephew, my friends again, my clients, my colleagues!!! I really love people. Here’s to gratitude for 49 years and to doing headstands for 49 more… ❤️🎉❤️🎉🙏❤️ by @nelshelby
