NEMESTUDIO, CS2 House, 2024.
.
.
We are happy to share that the CS2 House is now featured in the June issue of Architectural Record as the House of the Month! 🙏@archrecordmag
.
.
CS2 House is a small low-cost house with one big roof and a circular base. Two volumes, two footprints, and two plan types interact and foster multiple ways of living, making the house feel both familiar and unfamiliar. The compositional misalignments between the circular and rectangular footprints create various outdoor areas, including a small terrace on the upper level and shaded outdoor spaces on the ground floor.

Instead of seeing low budget as simply a limitation, the design explores new sensibilities and potentials of sufficiency.

One roof, one base, and multiple stories to tell.

NEMESTUDIO, Hempo Longhouse and Other Stories, 2024. Precast exterior hempcrete wall panels, 1:1 physical mock up, displaying half of the 8’X4’ panel.

Winner, 2024 Best of Design Awards, The Architect’s Newspaper. @archpaper
.
Thanks to its insulation properties and thermal mass, building with hemp naturally regulates indoor temperature and humidity. Unlike synthetic insulation materials that trap heat and require HVAC systems to maintain air quality, hempcrete stores heat in its thermal mass, gradually releasing it as the building cools down. Additionally, hempcrete walls are resistant to fire and mold.
.
.
Hempo Longhouse is a project on regenerative and low-carbon architectural construction. Through the design of a longhouse in California built with the plant-based construction material hempcrete, the project imagines new construction protocols, supply chains, and agroecological stewardship around hempcrete construction and restages a practice that is situated within the infrastructures of just energy transitions, decarbonized climate futures, and non-extractive frameworks. The project is conceptualized as a longhouse, which alludes to a building typology that defies norms of private ownership and suggests alternative land ownership and communal living formats. Through the design of an 8’X4’ prefabricated hempcrete panel assembly system, the project experiments with the material’s casting capacities, resulting in various construction protocols, insulation and thermal mass properties, and aesthetic effects.
.
Hempo Longhouse and Other Stories is made possible by the 2023 Lau Just Climate Futures Grant from UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design.
