Final stage of production on this piece: trimming the edges and conditioning the paper by rubbing the back with paraffin wax followed by repeated burnishing with a coil of glass beads (approximately 40 passes). This process helps insure that the work can hang flat and relaxed, without any tension or kinks from the various layers. It also enables the work to be safely rolled and unrolled for storage and display. This process is taken from the final stage of assembling a traditional Japanese hanging scroll or kakejiku.

A VERY condensed peek at the process of backing this giant collage with a layer of kozo washi using the traditional Japanese method of Urauchi. Backing a piece of this scale solo is quite difficult and I decided to challenge myself even more by going old school and not using an acetate backing for laying down my pasted sheets of Sekishu. Handling sheets of pasted washi this large requires quite a bit of physical strength, sensitivity to the materials, coordination, and precision in the lay down. All in all it went pretty well but I wish I had longer arms! Stay tuned for the final reveal.

Nazar I & Nazar II, 2026
Aquatint etchings with gampi chine collé on Somerset 300g paper.

The title for this series is derived from the Arabic word that roughly translates to “sight, surveillance, or attention” and references the popular eye shaped amulet found in cultures throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean believed to protect against the evil eye. These works were made as a meditation on our shared humanity and a symbolic offering of protection for those suffering senseless oppression, violence, displacement, and cruelty.

Sound on for some gorgeous mokuhanga ASMR.

Social media can really affect the way we understand time and effort, especially when it comes to making something with your hands. I usually speed up and edit my videos so that people can get a sense of the whole story or process easily. I’ve realized it’s equally important to put some unedited real time glimpses of my studio practice out into the world. The labor and the slowness (aka devotion) are some of my favorite things about being a printmaker.

This mokuhanga woodblock print is titled “Gaki” ( a term from Japanese Buddhism which translates to “hungry ghost”). It was created while an artist in residence @cfshe_gallery

The Tower, 2026
Monoprint collage on dyed handmade kozo paper backed with Sekishu paper.
70” x 42”

This image first came to me in a terrifying nightmare that I had during one of the most difficult periods of my life. For a long time I felt haunted by both the image and the feeling that accompanied it. I carried it with me for over a year before I was able to actually manifest it in the physical realm. Most of my work deals with transformation in some form or another and this piece is no different. The title is a direct reference to the Tower card in the traditional Rider-Waite tarot deck. This card, often considered an omen of destruction, loss, and calamity resonates deeply with me because of its duality. While misfortune and heartbreak are inevitable, they are also the necessary prelude to transformation and rebirth, an essential clearing of the dead and dying that makes room for things about to be born. The labor intensive processes of printing, cutting, pasting, and assembling this work became a 3 month long practice of meticulous artistic devotion to the very thing that haunted me. Somewhere, or perhaps everywhere, in this devotional process of creation, this symbol of psychological descent was transmuted into something completely different. When the work was finally complete and I was able to look at it in its newly realized physical form, I was hit with the overwhelming realization that the image no longer carried with it the terror of my initial encounter but instead had come to represent the opposite: a powerful and irrevocable spiritual/psychological ascent. For me, this is when my work feels the most successful: when the physical process of artistic creation catalyzes mental, emotional, and spiritual expansion. What remains, the art object, is merely an artifact of repeated acts of devotion to the intangible.
