🦋Cho-Cho San 蝶々さん🦋

What happens when a story written more than 100 years ago is looked at again through the body and perspective of today?

Cho-Cho San 蝶々さん is a dance theatre work by Nene Okada and Marco Girardin, inspired by John Luther Long’s story Madame Butterfly.

The piece explores the story of a Japanese woman who falls in love with an American man, while questioning the images of “Japanese women” created through a Western gaze.

Love and power.
Gender and cultural difference.
Being seen — and finding your own voice.

Combining contemporary dance, elements inspired by Japanese movement, live music and spoken text, Cho-Cho San brings this familiar story into the present and asks how we can look at it differently today.
