Apple announces watchOS 11 with new training features and Live Activities

At Apple’s recent WWDC event, the company introduced the latest version of watchOS, featuring new productivity and personalization options, along with enhanced training and health tools. Key additions include a training load metric and pregnancy tracking, similar to features offered by Garmin, Coros, Whoop, and Oura. The Apple Watch Ultra’s evolution towards becoming a Garmin-like device continues with these updates.

Training load, a familiar concept to physiologists, sports scientists, and coaches, measures the cumulative amount of exercise, factoring in both duration and intensity. This metric helps users determine if they are overtraining, undertraining, or training optimally. Various methods exist to calculate training load, such as Garmin’s EPOC-based metric and TRIMP (Training Impulse) by Dr. Eric Banister, which use heart rate data and training duration.

Apple’s approach involves a new Effort Rating system, which assigns a rating from one to ten for 17 cardio-based workouts using data like age, height, weight, GPS, heart rate, and elevation. Users can manually adjust these ratings if needed. Apple calculates a 28-day training load average, comparing it to the last seven days and classifying it as well below, below, steady, above, or well above, though it doesn’t provide specific values like Garmin.

The Effort Rating, essential in calculating training load, multiplies effort by duration to determine the load. Unlike other companies, Apple’s method does not heavily rely on heart rate data for calculating training load, which could be beneficial for low-heart-rate activities. However, only 17 cardio-based activities provide an automated Effort Rating, excluding cycling. The effectiveness of Apple’s training load tool will be clearer once the feature rolls out this fall. by @neoex.io

Peloton Strikes Content Deal With TikTok

The digital fitness company is widening its target with new content.

Peloton will power the social media platform’s new fitness hub, #TikTokFitness, tapping Gen Z to add subscribers.

A mix of short-form workouts, live classes, and bonus footage from instructors, influencers, and celebrities will be available within the app — marking the first time Peloton has produced custom content outside its owned network. Shares spiked 14% when the deal was announced, but its true value will be determined by how many social followers convert to paying customers.

Stacking partnerships, Peloton’s reaching users across hotels, colleges, sports leagues, and corporate wellness.
Late last year, it also teamed with lululemon — becoming the apparel brand’s exclusive digital fitness provider while absorbing offloaded MIRROR users.

Prioritizing content over hardware, Peloton is rebranding around accessibility and aiming to exist for anyone, anytime, anywhere. But, it’s a steep shift for an equipment maker that built its name on exclusivity. by @neoex.io

BODYARMOR Founder Acquires Majority Stake in NOBULL and the new owner has already teased an IPO.

NOBULL is now under new ownership. The performance apparel brand sold a majority stake to Impact Capital, the family office of BODYARMOR and Glaceau vitaminwater founder Mike Repole. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

NOBULL is currently navigating a transformation, broadening appeal from garage gym CrossFitter to sport-agnostic high-performer — all without losing its cool.
So far, its no-frills branding has translated well to extensions in footwear, swimwear, and performance apparel, with the brand reaching a $500M valuation and landing an undisclosed investment from the venture arm of the NFL late last year.

But, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, as recently, the brand has hit a few growing pains.
In May, the company’s CMO Todd Meleney resigned, followed by a round of layoffs that cut 35% of the NOBULL’s workforce — the company said it was necessary to “safeguard the brand for the future” amid challenging economic conditions.

Interestingly, according to CNBC, Repole’s first unsolicited offer, made 14 months ago, was ignored. Now, taking him up on it, it’s possible the brand is recapitalizing to prep for sustained future growth, with Repole insisting an IPO is inevitable for the brand.

As Alo Yoga, HOKA, and others have proven alongside NOBULL, there’s room for “challenger” performance outfitters. But competing is a costly business. taken in Los Angeles, California by @neoex.io

adidas Launches RHEON High-Performance Reactivewear
to give athletes a leg up.

Global sportswear company adidas partnered with RHEON Labs to launch new performance apparel called Techfit Control.

Spun out of a NASA project, RHEON developed an energy-absorbing, highly strain-sensitive polymer. Incorporated into clothing, it stays soft and flexible in its natural state and stiffens when subjected to force.

Woven to reinforce major muscle groups, adidas’ men’s and women’s leggings provide reactive support for high-intensity movement.

Stefan Olander, former Nike exec and OMORPHO CEO, thinks there’s a lot more that can be done. Despite the global sportswear industry’s size, there hasn’t been much functional innovation in a “very long time.”

Apollo Neuro has launched a wearable designed to keep you asleep using ai and sound waves to go beyond tracking.

Apollo Neuro, makers of a wearable that promotes stress resilience with low-frequency sound waves, launched a new sleep-improving feature called Stay Asleep.

Available through its debut membership platform Apollo Labs, the AI-enabled function automatically detects waking and delivers a series of soothing vibrations to keep the wearer asleep.

Tested in partnership with Oura, wearers reported 30 minutes more sleep each night, including more deep sleep and REM sleep.

“Apollo Labs represents one of the first technologies that works for us by reminding us that we are in control of how we feel at any moment, even when we’re sleeping — one of the core teachings of mindfulness and meditation.” said co-founder Dr. David Rabin.

Between NOWATCH’s “awareable,” Happy Ring’s smart mood detector, and WHOOP’s work to quantify breathwork, stress and sleep will soon be understood down to the millisecond. But, no device will be able to combat the fast-paced, screen-filled lifestyle that often prevents people from getting into bed in the first place. taken in Los Angeles, California by @neoex.io

Nix Launches Hydration-Sensing Sweat Patch and endurance athletes are just the beginning.

As the next generation of consumer wearables hits the market, sweat is now data. Nix has launched its Hydration Biosensor, a noninvasive skin patch for evaluating fluid and electrolyte losses in real time.

Targeted toward endurance athletes, the sweat-sensing device syncs recovery and performance insights to iOS devices and Garmin sport watches, with planned integrations with Strava, Wahoo, Zwift, and more in the near future.

While Nix is also experimenting with blood, saliva, and tears, Cass says sweat’s accessibility makes it the most promising. “Sweat requires nothing more than a simple patch — wear it and forget it.”

Next-gen health wearables are leveraging microfluidic, electrochemical, and molecular science to derive a real-time performance edge. And countless startups across the world believe endurance athletes are their superusers. taken in Los Angeles, California by @neoex.io

Netflix Adds Nike Training Club Workouts as the streaming giant enters fitness.

Fitness content is coming to Netflix - Starting December 30, Netflix members will have access to more than 90 workouts from Nike Training Club, the apparel brand’s digital fitness platform. Featuring more than 30 hours of content, sessions are geared toward different ability levels and fitness modalities—from yoga to strength training to HIIT—all requiring minimal space/equipment. Perfectly timed to coincide with resolution season, Netflix’s 223M global members can expect programming in 10 languages, with additional workouts coming throughout the year.

Over the years, numerous platforms claimed to be the “Netflix of fitness.” Now, the streaming giant may be vying for that title.

* Launched in 2020, Apple has expanded Fitness+ to iPhone users in 21+ countries.
* In 2021, Samsung invested in obé fitness, expanding the library of health content on its smart TVs.
* This summer, Equinox partnered with Google TV and Android TV OS devices to distribute its digital fitness content.

Netflix is hoping the addition of workout content helps it attract/retain members by increasing the perceived value of its subscription. All streamers, for that matter, could become powerful distribution partners for digital fitness brands. by @neoex.io

Smart ring maker Oura launched an employee wellness program that centers around optimizing sleep.

Dubbed Oura for Business, the enterprise solution provides companies with biometric rings and a dashboard that tracks anonymized data from its users. The rationale is clear — wearable tech takes the guesswork and assumptions out of managing workload and instituting interventions before problems arise.

“Business” expands upon multiple fronts, including its work with sports teams and hand in academic research and healthcare. Piloted with over 200 organizations, including the US military and clients like weight loss platform Noom, Oura will now use its clinically tested insights into sleep and physical readiness to broaden its use cases.

It has been a very busy year for Oura, raising new capital, eclipsing 1M users, replacing its CEO, and pushing interoperability through partnerships with Therabody, Strava, and Natural Cycles. 2023 will be about tying all the moving parts together in one easy-to-understand experience, at home, on the turf, or in the office. taken in Los Angeles, California by @neoex.io

WHOOP Partners with TYR for Smart Swimwear - The human performance company wants to be invisible

WHOOP is taking its smart apparel to the pool. Partnering with swimwear maker TYR to create data-tracking swimsuits — the latest product extension of its smart apparel business WHOOP Body.

Designed with a pouch for its WHOOP 4.0 sensor, the form-fitting swimsuits allow for waterproof, low-drag, real-time data monitoring.
Why it matters: While Apple joins Garmin in bulky adventure watches, WHOOP wants its always-on tech to be invisible.
Already offering integrated apparel like t-shirts, shorts, leggings, and sports bras, WHOOP Body is developing performance-tracking solutions for times when wearing a smartwatch is impractical… and they’re not alone in chasing a smart apparel market set to reach $5.3B by 2024

While product extensions and retail distribution will keep its subscription business afloat, WHOOP knows its early success came from game-changing tech. And to beat Apple and Google to the next generation of wearables, the data will have to deliver. taken in Los Angeles, California by @neoex.io

Google's $349 smartwatch supports maps, payments, health tracking, and smart home controls

The Google Pixel Watch was released on October 13, 2022, following a pre-order phrase that began October 6. It features a sleek design with limitless customizations to reflect your style. It also integrates the best of Google and Fitbit, delivering accurate health monitoring and forming a powerful activity companion.

The Pixel Watch comes in two models—Wi-Fi and LTE—but only one size: 41mm. A mic and speaker are built-in, so as with basically any smartwatch, this one supports alerts for things like events, texts, and calls. Google Assistant is available at a moment's notice, hands-free (to play music, respond to texts, get directions, etc.), and the mic lets you set alarms, read/send texts from your phone, make calls, start timers, etc. There's a companion app for the Pixel Watch.

With Google Wallet integration, your cards are available from your wrist, letting you use Google Pay for contactless checkout in stores.

The watch runs WearOS and borrows lots of design elements from Fitbit (which Google owns), so there are some things that require you to log in to your Fitbit account. You need an Android phone running Android OS 8.0 or newer to connect to the watch; iOS phones are not currently supported. by @neoex.io

Peloton has officially entered the rowing world but the competition is steep.

The connected fitness company opened pre-orders for Peloton Row, its long-awaited rowing machine set to ship this December.

Sleek and quiet with a swiveling touchscreen, the rower is well-designed. But, playing to its strengths, the accompanying software and content stand out, including learn-to-row mode, form cues, a toggle for pace changes, progress-tracking analytics, and studio classes synced to curated playlists.

Rowing works 86% of the muscles in the body, and an effective workout usually takes under 20 minutes. Naturally, the exercise modality is continuing to rise in popularity.

The price tag is $3,195, not including $44/mo. monthly content subscription. taken in Los Angeles, California by @neoex.io
